535291 2007-03-24 15:04:00 Kind of weird that someone should join us just to complain about peanut butter?Yeah. He/she is evidently trying to make some sort of point - probably doing the same on many other forums. Now where's my Ban button? Greg (193)
535292 2007-03-24 19:55:00 China, the country who exports Wheat Gluten laced with rat poison to the US for use in Dog and Cat food. NZ has some of the food stockpiled in warehouses.
I'll stick to kiwi peanut butter thanks even if it is more expensive.

535293 2007-03-24 19:57:00 Anyone notice that Sanitarium and Signature brands of peanut butter are now made in China?

So what?
JJJJJ (528)
535294 2007-03-24 20:52:00 Well,
"Sanitarium is an Australasian food company that is owned by the Seventh-day Adventist Church. In New Zealand the company trades as Sanitarium Health Food Company but is operated by the New Zealand Conference Association, a trust registered under the Charitable Trust Act 1957"

I wonder if they pay any tax in China, afaik they pay little or none here.

535295 2007-03-24 21:03:00 Yes,

What really needs to happen is for western countries wages to drop steadily, so that China's advantage disappears.

I mean just because we live in New Zealand what gives us the right to earn say $15.00 an hour, or in Italy $30.00 an hour ?

Over the next few years the world markets will realise that us Western countries that have had our manufacturing "hollowed out" are living in a fools paradise with nothing of substance holding it all up !

As I have said before, it is all very well for some poor family in South Auckland being able to buy cheap shoes and clothes, but NZ has to create the export income to be able to purchase those goods.

I also say the world has to put pressure on China to stop polluting the world - they are building one new power station A WEEK (i read). That will slow down their manufacturing and exports. And to sop all piracy and intellectual theft.

regards

DigbyPolluting the World? Hey, wait a second it, what about 3 geoges hydro dams in China? Are they supposed to be enviromental friendlier? And I got to China is pretty polluted. And government should start enforcing rules on that kind of stuff.
Hmm, I wonder how is it going to be for the Western is the near future.

Thats true. My fathers village in China 50 years ago, you could go swimming in the water around there. Now you wouldn't even touch it. It's that polluted.

The three gorges dam? Shoddy Chinese construction at it's best.

Not really the case.Generally the living costs is much cheaper than NZ so decreasing the wages won't help much.

So if you can drive the GST down from 12.5% and change the income tax then probably it's a good thing.

How would you compete with the market such as Hk where they have no GST?

535299 2007-03-25 03:19:00 There is an aspect of dependency which must be addressed too.

NZ (and most western nations) are now becoming almost completely dependent on China for its clothing, electrical goods, and increasingly, food. As such, China is growing in political power in terms on the international stage.

What does this mean? Well - whenever any other country has human rights abuses, governments jump up and down about it, the media jumps all over it, and citizens of countries are concerned. What about China? Countries like NZ which have traditionally taken a strong stand about human rights are now putting all that aside, and saying that it doesn't matter - so long as they get their FTA.

Furthermore, the actions of nations towards China is sending a negative message to other rougue states: if you a) have a big army, b) have weapons, c) and threaten to invade neighbouring states, then the Western world doesn't care whether or not you uphold human rights, whether or not you exercise democracy, and will quite happily beg you to sign a FTA with them.

Yes I agree on the dependecy thing !

What if there was a war ?

Where would we get our clothes from, or our shoes, or our computers ? or our peanut butter ?
