535281 2007-03-24 04:33:00 Things that we grow here in NZ we cannot get. Just look at the red meats and seafood, look at their prices. Now that's made in NZ.

Just gotta love those $20-25 red meats and cod fillets.
And remem .. the days when stuff like cars and airfares cost so much more in NZ. AirNZ talks about their prices overseas were still the same price as it was 20yrs ago but now with increasing cost they have to fight with other competitors. Geez ... they must of been laid back 20yrs ago if they could price fares the same as now days, and how much was the avg salary 20yrs ago. Perhaps the tickets overseas today should be at $6,000 or something.

Its difficult enof getting oysters fresh in its unshelled unopened.
Overseas if one scales the fish they unshell their own oysters and they use the shell for decoration purpose. I've asked around and been to wholesalers stores those with their own boats which also sell to end customers like you and I and I just cannot get them. Well, I don't have a high end restaurant so I dunno.

535282 2007-03-24 06:21:00 Don't forget your made in China undies, socks, teshirt and jeans.

And there is something wrong with it. We don't make anything anymore.
All we do is export dead animal carcasses, logs and less of them too now, and a some dairy products.
Which is why everyones always panicking over having a high dollar.

And the problem is too many other countries have logs, dairy products and dead animals too.
We need to produce high tech stuff, or even low tech stuff like China.
Hmm, low tech, and not a dead animal. And it has to enhance our standard of living?

Could we export Sue Bradford?

535283 2007-03-24 07:18:00 Just out of interest I lifted up my "Microsoft" keyboard-made in China' My PC box is also made in China. My almost new Epson scanner/copier/printer guide was printed in Indonesia so the Epson itself was probably made there also. My el-cheapo computer speakers were made in China (you have to open them up to find this out). My monitor is from some Asian country-Korea I think. I found an old fried internal modem was made in Taiwan. My Gigabyte mouse is made in China. The vast majority of common household electric or electronic equipment is made in Asia if you take the time to look. I have a top end Hi-Fi system (well to me anyway) but I would bet my socks that most of the internal electronic components were made in Asian factories-perhaps even the cases and speaker boxes with the appropriate badge stuck on. Where do your top end and very expensive running shoes and equipment etc. come from?(I won't comment on the outrageous prices!). If it were not for the fact that these products and components are made offshore in Asian countries we would probably not be able to even afford a basic PC and associated items. I would hazard a guess that even your top end PC componentry is simply rebadged but with a made in China/Taiwan/Indonesia etc. sticker on it somewhere. Where the profits go I leave you to ponder on. Gordon

Where have you been for the last 10/20 years.

We already knew all that.

What we need to know is what do we do about it and what will happen if it continues.

535285 2007-03-24 08:21:00 Made in China products are considering good for EXPORTS. If you live in local China the products you'll receive here and compare to there is a lot of difference.
 China did make some quality products, and it is the price is what you pay for.
I.E.
I want to get a $3000+ PC. And most of the components are made in China province in Taiwan. Talking about quality here this PC can perform a lot better than cheap PCs.
Another example: Levono computers. The Lenovo itself is made in China. The IBM thinkpads are made in Singapour because they need a better quality by higher class customers.

I mean the world market recently fall, and the world fall with Shanghai & other province stock fall. :illogical Talking about most of our house products are made in china anyway. The poors have a chance to survive now, rather than eating nothing, wearing nothing, etc.

...., hmm, where can I see a household products that is not made in China? Hmm, maybe not.

535286 2007-03-24 08:21:00 and what will happen if it continues.

We will all be grovelling to the rich Chinese tourists and begging on the streets as they will be the only country left making anything. We'll be the lackeys shining their shoes and driving them around in people powered carts.

Yes,

What really needs to happen is for western countries wages to drop steadily, so that China's advantage disappears.

I mean just because we live in New Zealand what gives us the right to earn say $15.00 an hour, or in Italy $30.00 an hour ?

Over the next few years the world markets will realise that us Western countries that have had our manufacturing "hollowed out" are living in a fools paradise with nothing of substance holding it all up !

As I have said before, it is all very well for some poor family in South Auckland being able to buy cheap shoes and clothes, but NZ has to create the export income to be able to purchase those goods.

I also say the world has to put pressure on China to stop polluting the world - they are building one new power station A WEEK (i read). That will slow down their manufacturing and exports. And to sop all piracy and intellectual theft.

535289 2007-03-24 12:20:00 Kind of weird that someone should join us just to complain about peanut butter? Scouse (83)
535290 2007-03-24 13:31:00 I noticed that the Peanut Butter from ETA was made in China and Australia about 6 months ago

The Peanut butter from China was so hard it nearly broke the knife getting it out of the jar. Upon reading the jar the Peanut Butter only has peanuts in it unlike other peanut butter that also has oil (to make it soft). The label was also slightly different not quite matching the Australian one - sort of cheap graphic imitation.

Upon looking at three jars I had - 2 from OZ and 1 from China they all had different nutritional info on them and ingredients as well

So much for standard peanut butter
