534387 2007-03-19 17:12:00 The news shows on TV are waiting for the world's largest airplane to arrive (from where?) and the streets all around the airport are packed and have shut down traffic.

Eight stories tall, over 800 seating capacity with economy seats installed, four onboard spas, 15 restrooms, double decks...etc...etc.

Sorry I don't have a vid of it...but it is kinda a little ways away from me here near Palm Springs. I'll try to get some links later.

They say that AirBus will have ten of these running between here and Australia in the next three or four years.

Try this link to get the local (LA) news from Channel 11/Fox TV (www.myfoxla.com)

This is Fox's vid so far (www.myfoxla.com)

534390 2007-03-19 21:03:00 I think Airbus is trying to drum up business for the airplane with US carriers as the current return on investment is not too great without lots more sales. Just takes a large glitch in the oil market and this thing could be a white elephant.. paulw (1826)

534392 2007-03-20 03:57:00 And one also touched down in New York within minutes of the one landing in LA. And I do believe that the Antonov An-225 is the largest PLANE in the world.

"The An-225 is quoted as having a maximum takeoff weight of over 1.3 million pounds (600,000 kg). The FAI gives credit for a slightly lower weight of 1.12 million pounds (508,200 kg), the record set by an An-225 in 1989 for the largest mass ever lifted by an airplane to an altitude of 6,500 ft (2,000 m). The An-225 was originally built to ferry the Soviet Buran space shuttle but it is now used to transport various outsize cargos. Only one example was ever completed, and it is currently available for charter flights through the British company Air Foyle. The An-225 is a cargo transport only and has never been used as an airliner"

534394 2007-03-20 05:28:00 We have HAD an oil glitch . . . we are paying higher than history for fuel right now . . . .

SIDEBAR HERE:

The ANT designation, represents Andrei N . Tupolev, a fine Russian aircraft designer .

As a matter of history, we had an ANT-25 land here about a ½ mile from here a bunch of years back . It was basically a flying gastank and had a huge wing so it could get off the ground with its single engine .

On July 13 of the year 1937, a three-man Soviet crew--Mikhail Gromov, Andrei Youmachev and Sergei Daniline-- flew an ANT-25 from Moscow, across the North Pole, to San Jacinto, California, a distance of slightly more than 6,295 miles .

Not only did the Russian aviators set a new world distance record for a nonstop flight in a straight line, but they also blazed an aerial route across the Arctic .

The route they pioneered was to have great flight significance for both commercial and military aviation .

Due to many Soviet overstatements and the unpleasant days of the 1950s I think many people tried to claim the aircraft did not make those flights .

For the most part, many of the claims made by the Soviets in those days were true, as lying tended to get you shot if Uncle Joe was lenient or sent to Siberia if he was not .

I can take a picture of the plaque that is on the spot where it landed if you would like to see it . Let me know .
