"In some ways, debating whether or not Windows Vista is good for gaming is a moot point. A futile argument. Water under the bridge.

That's because, like it or not, Microsoft Corp.'s shiny new operating system is here to stay. By the end of 2007, a whole new generation of games for Windows Vista will be here as well. At that point, if you're a Windows gamer, you'll have no choice but to upgrade to Vista -- unless you're ready to throw in the towel on PC gaming and buy an Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 or Nintendo Wii instead."

536487 2007-03-28 17:24:00 Yeah, Vista is good for gaming, but if Microsoft made directx10 supported by XP, then Vista would not be any better then XP...
The only reason DX10 doesn't support XP is due to the fact that this way Vista can sell better...
All in all, Vista ain't bad but...will be better after a few service packs :)

536488 2007-03-28 22:30:00 I think it was Toms Hardware that did some benchmarks of games like FEAR and STALKER (Maybe it was Supreme Commander?). In NO WAY was Vista up to keeping up with XP. Straight of the bat, the drivers are more in their infant stage with Vista. This will improve with time. Also, memory usage in Vista is insanely high, as soon as you boot you're using over 400MB more RAM than if you were in XP.

Mind you, games like Crysis are going to look absolutely stunning and will be worth getting Vista for many people. Heck, if I had a top-end machine then I would be running Vista specifically in preperation JUST for Crysis!
Still, in terms of raw number, I doubt Vista will be beating much right now. Im sure people will bring out apps to 'strip' it before long, although Im not sure how much good it'll do. With Dual-core CPU's and memory getting cheaper by the day, it'll just get absorbed by the general public as the norm before long :)

Simply 'too big' it appears. I wonder how Crysis is going to cope, seeing as STALKER does so badly on some peoples Vista machines, even with high-end 8800 series cards! :-/

But then again, what Im saying is something anybody could have figured using just common sense ;)

536490 2007-03-28 22:49:00 To get the full benefits for gaming out of Vista you well need a graphics card that supports DirectX 10 and only Nvidia have those at the moment the 8800 series of card, and games that are written for DirectX 10, which I don't think there are many of those yet. STALKER has acknowledged problems with Vista (a patch was relased on the 26th). This is more about STALKER, than it is games running under Vista. I don't think you can then extrapolate to potential problems for Crysis.

I think the biggest problem here is that MS has tried to downplay how big a shift Vista is were always are going to be backwards compatility issues, driver issues etc etc. My Vista RTM is still stitting on disc because I want to minimise the hassles I go through. I won't have a real reason to switch to Vista until I'm seriously missing out on something with a game by still running XP -- and until I can afford a DX10 card that isn't going to happen in the next few months.

If you didn't by so many lenses on Trademe you'd be so flush you'd be using DX10 graphics cards to stop the dining room table from wobbling.:)
