The cash flow generated by Windows allows Microsoft to make investments in new businesses like digital music players and online services."

That quote above comes from that article.

That is scandoulous what other company makes a 75% profit margin on a crappy product and then subsidises other products like say Xbox ?

I don't believe the article anyway.

The thing is that when XP came out everyone wanted it as it had some good features and ME was so crappy.

But none was dying for Vista, there was no build up to it, it was all a bit ho hum.

536104 2007-03-27 02:20:00 soooooooo tell me, how is a business supposed to fund the development of new products? wotz (335)
536105 2007-03-27 03:40:00 When has Microsoft ever come up with a new product anyway?

They copied the GUI after saying it was a dumb idea in te first place, IE came about because of Netscape, Xbox came about because of the others.
Etc, etc.

Fund court cases and buying out other companies more like.

Out of a 75% margin

I agree with Digby, that's f'ing scandalous. What's even more galling, ta pctek, is that there is rarely anything new and most of it doesn't frigging well work as it should.

Windows Vista suffers from a bug that causes many machines to stall while deleting, copying and moving files, a flaw that has provoked consternation in online forums.

"I've seen this bug in action, and trust me, it's as if you're copying over a 64k link using only 256mb of RAM," one Reg reader complained. "To add to the problem, you can't cancel or anything."

According to a thread on Microsoft's TechNet site, Microsoft has issued a hotfix for the problem, but it has failed to quell the outrage. For one thing, individual users must get Microsoft's approval before the fix can be downloaded, according to our tipster. And for another, hotfixes are more of a pain to install than patches.

We've contacted a Microsoft spokeswoman, who promised to see if a patch for the problem in the works. Meanwhile, Vista users continue to grumble.

"I simply can not believe that I updated to a new computer and put windows Vista on it to find that it's not even capable of moving and deleting files in an efficient manner," one disaffected user posted in the Microsoft forum. "Microsoft must be kidding! The most basic of features that I use all the time is a slow train wreck." ®

One of many.

536107 2007-03-27 06:10:00 Well Microsoft is set to spend US$9 Billion on research and development this year, so that 75% may not go all that far. somebody (208)

Total research or just Windows research?

MS sales to June 2006: $44.3bn. Operating profit: $16.5bn (though no doubt, this does not include R&D, i.e. add the R&D).

And they still have nothing decent to show for it .

Here is another take on Vista's sales
. yahoo . com/ap/070326/microsoft_vista_sales . html" target="_blank">biz . yahoo . com

Microsoft used to make about 80%+ margin on Windows during its boom years in the 90's when the companies share price was around $90 US and the company was worth about $600 Billion US . Although software costs a lot to develop it can have fantastic financial returns when it becomes successful because you just licence the copy or copies of the program and ship millions of copied disks as opposed to having manufacturing facilities and production costs for hardware which has much lower profit margins .

MS shares are currently valued at $28 . 22 US and the company is worth $276 Billion US .
