735936 2009-01-07 22:54:00 So, there I was, having a quick game of Spider Solitaire, when without warning, my entire screen changes to a black background with vertical green lines - everythiong else is gone. Nothing I did changed anything, but a reboot has fixed it - for the moment.
I'll be doing the usual searches for driver updates etc., but I wondered if anyone has come across this before, which might help me short-cut the solution. Does it sound like a software or hardware issue?

The monitor is a Dell E228WFP, the video card is a Radeon 4850, and the OS is Vista business, with all the updates.

Any ideas, anyone?

735938 2009-01-07 23:01:00 Graphics card playing up maybe?could be - I'm just downloading the latest Radeon drivers. Of course it may not happen again anyway, so how will I know... Tony (4941)
735939 2009-01-07 23:19:00 Look in the event log - click start, in the search type in event viewer when it appears click it, under windows logs on the left , expand that - look through system and application logs - if there are any errors they should be showing - if so what do they say ? wainuitech (129)
735940 2009-01-07 23:54:00 When it happens next, try restarting JUST the monitor. This will eliminate the monitor, as it's the easiest to diagnose. :D

I doubt it would be the OS.

735943 2009-01-08 03:20:00 Look in the event log Didin't show anything of significance. :( Tony (4941)
735944 2009-01-08 03:53:00 Methinks it might be a temperature problem. The Catalyst Control Center is reporting a card temperature of 73°, but the fan speed is only 9%. I'll open the box and see what is going on. Tony (4941)
735945 2009-01-08 04:09:00 Does sound like a video card issue, however 73C is not overly hot for a 4850C assuming that the reading is a GPU temp. I am fairly sure later versions of the ATI Catalyst control center has a fan slide bar that shows for the 4850. Battleneter2 (9361)
