736989 2009-01-10 10:04:00 Newish systemVista HP. E6400, 4 Gb ram, 9600gt, 1Gb.

Machine running just fine and I usually keep it running non-stop. Shut it down last night and started this morning but it froze after about 15 minutes. Tried rebooting but came up with an error saying over-clocking error (never been overclocked) so went to bios and reset to default settings. Another reboot failed, just stopped at first screen so shut down for a couple of hours.
Tried re-starting and it loaded up but, again, froze after 15 minutes.
Any ideas, please?

736990 2009-01-10 10:12:00 Have you scanned it for malware / viruses recently?

Does it do the same thing in safe mode??

736991 2009-01-10 10:15:00 Do you mean hard freeze? As in not even hitting numlock toggles the numlock LED?

Physically inspect the motherboard for signs of fatigue / excess current draw (my motherboards used to melt, literally, at the ATX power connector). Run memtest on your RAM too, to make sure it's not being a pain. Can't hurt to do a CMOS reset either :p

Check Cpu temp in bios.
Still under warranty?

736993 2009-01-10 16:42:00 Freezes in safe mode. Can't run for long enough to do AV scan. Will physically check pc innards. did full scal with Malwarebytes the day before - no issues.
It hard freezes - nothing, not even Cntrl-Alt-Delete to bring up task manager.

What motherboard? I'd be suspicious of the hardware

736995 2009-01-10 21:58:00 If you think it could be software related in any way simply do a restore, it might confirm something at least. I'll leave the hardware advice to pctek.. Ofthesea (14129)
736996 2009-01-11 01:28:00 Tried a start but no go - nothing. Motherboard an AsusPB5 20 months old.
Opened up box and everything looked good. Tried moving memory to different slots but still no good.
Swaped the 2 x 2 GB memory for older 2 x 1 GB. Booted and got to fialled over-clocking so set bios to default and altered the boot order to normal. PC started fine and is ok 1 hour later.
Why would the memory (bought mid Nov) just pack in?

Could be BIOS reset to incorrect voltage for the RAM

736998 2009-01-11 01:57:00 Why would the memory (bought mid Nov) just pack in? Memory like any other PC component can fail at any time - some can be faulty from New - others may last many years - thats just the way it is with PC Components.

BTW 20 Months is not that "newish" - most of the BIG manufactures say the life expectancy of a PC is 3 years - hence thats why normally the longest manufactures warranty on boards is 3 years.
