538538 2007-04-06 00:04:00 I hope I am in order posting this question on PressF1.

Can someone answer the following?
Is Digital TV coming later this year?
Will all current TV stations be sending out a digital signal?
Will all TVs sold after that date be digital?
Does one need a desktop box for present TVs?
Will it work with a TV tuner card in one's computer?
How much is the desktop box likely to cost?
Does one also need a dish aerial?

I am really showing my ignorance here, and thanks for any replies.

538539 2007-04-06 00:52:00 Digital freeview tv launches on may 2ND you will need a set top box which will cost around $300 to $400 which is yours to keep. Also a dish will cost an extra $300 or $400 but if you have a sky dish on your roof already you can use that. next year freeview plan to launch digital terrestrial which means you can use an existing uhf aerial for the signal, Currently you can only watch freeview with a dish.

Most tvs are now digital but if you have an old crt tv you are ok for several more years yet until they decide when to switch off the analogue signal.

538541 2007-04-06 01:43:00 I bought an 'el cheapo' box off Trade Me for around $100 and hooked up to the Sky dish... works a treat with TV1 and 2. Much better reception than aerial and a breeze to set up. IMO not worth forking out $300-400 for an 'approved' box.

If you want digital terestrial next year you will need yet another box and from what I understand- a good line of site to the transmitter.

Note that a 'standard' CRT TV will accept a 'digital' transmission, it just won't be as clear. Digital is different to HDTV.

538542 2007-04-06 02:19:00 I personally think that the satellite version will be a flop due to installation costs. When the terrestrial gets going which I believe is still 12 months away it may have a chance.

I was talking to some one at Sony last week and asked when digital SD and HD tuners will be included in their sets. He said 2009. I can't believe that we are so far behind the rest of the world with this stuff.

Digital TV is already here. It is called Sky TV. Yes it does cost.

Oh you are talking about FREE digital TV? Sorry there is no such thing as a free lunch. While the content may be provided free (quite a few of the Sky stuff is as well) it will still cost you for the set top box which does the decoding and also a satellite dish. These are the expensive bits.

If you are talking of HD TV well then that is another thing altogeather and I am really waiting to see that. USA have some nice rules over there as to how much must be shown as HD. Having watched many HD TV episodes on my PC from the US there is just beating the increase in quality even though it would look even better watching it on a real HD TV.

538545 2007-04-06 04:05:00 For New Zealand digital TV does and will exist in several formats from different content providers namely Sky, TVNZ Ondemand (MS format), Free View, Apple TV (set top box) and possibly a few others.
The delivery methods and formats will likely include satellite, broadband adsl and fibre no doubt supplied in competing codec formats from different suppliers which should make it interesting (confusing) for customers. Some of these methods will require the purchase of an HDTV or be able to run through existing computer screens.

Yeah, but then you get fed Rupert Murdochs "Fair and Balanced" (video.google.com) news reports :D
