personally i don't like to much oil of any type. while olive oil is ment to be better for you than other oils, too much oil is not good for you.

avocado oil is meant to handle the high temps better than olive oil.

537169 2007-04-01 01:22:00 For some strange reason the council many years ago planted olive trees along our street, they are now 20-25' high and the one I'm looking at out the window has lots of small olives on it.

I guess it takes a few more months for them to 'ripen' as they are about the size of a- small olive :D. (The only other comparison I can give is the size of a Cadbury mini creme egg)

Does anyone know how to tell when they are ready to pick... and is it something that the birds go after, or do I just have to worry about shooing off the pedestrians?

The olive tree on my property of course has absolutely no olives on it :(

The fruit can be picked green for pressing, but is ripe when it turns dark purple. I don't think ripe (black) olives are used for pressing, but their pickling process may be easier.

537171 2007-04-01 01:54:00 When buying olive oil it is by far the best if you can buy it in darkened bottles, to help stop light getting to the oil. For some bizarre reason most of the bottles are clear and this means that you do not know what exposure the bottles have had to sunlight before you buy the product. :annoyed:

Thank god I'm not Italian and I have better things to do with my time

There are self-incompatible varieties that do not set fruit without other varieties nearby, and there are varieties that are incompatible with certain others. Incompatibility can also occur for environmental reasons such as high temperatures.
