| 537157 | 2007-03-31 06:53:00 | Graham L: "Foreign muck. All anyone needs is Watties tomato sauce. With anything." Shock horror! Graham, hadn't you heard that there are some excellent olive oils made in New Zealand! Take up the challenge and dedicate yourself to just one day per week sampling new taste sensations - try homemade bread with olive oil and dukkah for starters! You took the words right out of my mouth, coldot. This was going to be my second post in succession on this subject ! New Zealand olive oil is superior - and frequently expensive !!! - try a small amount - If you have a refined palate (which is debatable in my case) then you will enjoy the benefits. Misty :D PS- did not think of the homemade bread (mmmmh !) |

Personally I find Italian food pretty repulsive.(Pasta is not food, Its glue) And I want to taste the flavours of the food not the oil that was splashed over it, I think you will find fresh home made jam spread onto fresh home baked bread far nicer then dipping it in oil. Thats just disgusting. |

Recently we spent time with my brother-in-law in TK and he ( -- not his wife or two daughters) made us pikelets, which we had with butter and jam -- delicious !!!!!!!! Misty ;) |

| 537160 | 2007-03-31 07:59:00 | Regardless of personal tastes in food products, not "refined palates" which sounds like some kind of food snob term, it is a fashion. Likewise rocket, coriander (the leaves not the powdered spice), huge lumps of garlic with everything. I watch a lot of chefs, some tend to be trendy and some just emphasis good ingredients and cooking without following trends. It IS a fashion, because of all the hype fat and mediterranean is the fashion lately. How many japanese do you see using olive oil? It will change, some other countries product will be the madly popular thing. |

Nah, somehow NZ boiled mutton, 2 veg and red wine just doesn't go together  Well I just had mutton for dinner. Boiled, no. Stuffed, trimmed and roasted long and slow. I had steamed silverbeet and carrots, swede souffle and roasted parsnips and potatoes. And mint sauce. Obviously as it didn't involve red wine or olive oil it must have been terrible. |

| 537165 | 2007-03-31 08:49:00 | How many japanese do you see using olive oil?It would be obvious to most. Most traditional Japanese dishes simply don't require olive oil nor would they be improved with it. I mean, raw salmon sushi drizzled in olive oil? Now that's weird! Steak Teriyaki browned in olive oil? Hmm, could be done, but no way would it be ideal. And I doubt you'd even eat Japanese food so dunno how you think you can comment. Anyway, you stick with your pork lard and we'll stick with the flavour, subtleties and health benefits of olive oil. |

Whats wrong with lard? Ever tried to make crumbly pastry for roast BBQ Pork buns with olive oil? |
