538548 2007-04-07 01:59:00 Does anyone have any info on when some HDTV content will be available here? I was sort of hoping that SKY's new satellite might start broadcasting in HD but it's just a wild hope.
I've got all the kit, but no content to watch!

538549 2007-04-07 02:12:00 Sky Have said they will start broadcasting in Hd format sometime next year, this is also because next year sky plan to release a mysky 2 which is made for hd format and other features. Hitech (9024)
538550 2007-04-07 02:18:00 Apparently the terrestrial Freeview transmissions starting next year will be in high definition, but the unfortunately the satellite transmissions starting next month will stay as standard definition. :) maccrazy (6741)
538551 2007-04-07 02:35:00 Thanks guys. I wonder if Sky will charge the earth for it. Seems unfair to spend a fortune on a widescreen HDTV then realise you have nothing to use it to it's potential. sjaxso (11577)
538552 2007-04-07 02:53:00 I personally think that the satellite version will be a flop due to installation costs.

quite the oposite. satelite is often cheaper and easier to install. by the time you got the tv aerial ($150-200) + amp ($50-$200) + poles ($50-$100) and spent the time putting it in the exact right place (assuming you can even get a reliable signal) its easier to just plonk on dish on. there are very few homes can't mount a dish and very few that can't get a sat signal.

Most people already have a UHF arial and can recieve UHF TV now. That's all they need plus a setop box to get DVB-T so it's way cheaper than satelite

o god thats so thin :illogical

uhf reception is not wide coverage, not every one has it, not everyone can get it and i doubt that many of them will even work with digital. unless your in a VERY good signal aera (which is not a lot of the country side) and have the later aerial systems the odds are you can forget terrestal digital.

538556 2007-04-08 09:54:00 HDTV via DVB-T will be in the main centers only. The rest of the country will have to use the satellite service.

As for the coverage you may find that the new UHF digital muxes are of a much higher power. If you have weak snowy analog now on your UHF and the digital transmission starts from the same site you may be very surprised.

AS you get perfect reception from digital at much lower signal levels

that will remain to be seen. afaik digital has less cross mod problems so you can push the signal levels higher. thats fine IF your resonably line of site. most people are not. how it reacts to all the other signal problems is the interesting bit. from what i saw from overseas some years ago it was problematic. signal strength is not everything ;)

time will tell.
