537690 2007-04-02 11:34:00 All things are relative. What do you do on the latop? I run my XP laptop with 512MB and do mostly writing and web browsing on it. I run my XP desktop with 2GB and do photo and video editing and game playing. Each runs fine at the tasks I do on it.

With too little RAM, the OS leaves insufficient for some apps or multitasking. 1GB is the sensible starting point for general use on a Vista PC. Two people could run it on 512MB, with one only using a word processor or web browsing and having no issues, while the second thinks it stinks cause it won't play Supreme Commander without choking. RAM is a cheap upgrade, especially at time of purchase with a Dell.

537691 2007-04-02 11:42:00 also depends on what bloatware is bundled with the pc.

one of the HP's i worked on (98se,32meg i think) was so slow it could barly run a browser.

i swear the manafactures simply replace current OS with new OS without any reguard for hardware.

537692 2007-04-02 11:43:00 Shoot the sales person alright; those damn monkeys don't have a clue. However at this point I should mention her brother, an IT guru (like us), said to her the minimum was 1GB. But she ignored his advice! Blade2 (6577)

Family . Family are always the worst offenders . . .

537694 2007-04-02 11:50:00 Yeah but what pisses me off most is not having a choice, I am looking at another pc but I won't touch Vista if I can avoid it not until the hoo haa gets sorted out and the OS is stable. Sometime around 2009 I think should do it. Blade2 (6577)
537695 2007-04-02 12:13:00 I'm moving back to Vista Ultimate again next week. I had 2GB for it, mind you.

512MB may be the cause of the slowness. Is it Vista Premium or Vista Basic?

Whether it is Basic or Premium, I think Vista would do best with 1GB or more.

537697 2007-04-02 21:14:00 There is no friggen choice either; you can't buy a new pc laptop without it .

Actually you can .
My suppliers still have laptops with XP on them .
Of course the new models as they arrive are infested with Vista, but there are still XP laptops around .

537698 2007-04-04 03:51:00 Could an enterprising retailer delete the Vista installation, destroy the stickers and sell the computer as an "Enhanced Pro Version" at a premium price?

Some times it is better to defer a purchase and be thought a fool, than to buy Vista and remove all doubt .
