537054 2007-03-31 01:15:00 hhmmm... I wouldn't compare piracy to rolling grannies... many of them are people who have just acted on anger. $100 (or more often) is too much for games

That argument has been around since Pong.

How long and how big a team do you think it takes to produce a decent game?

And its an excuse. I paid full NZ price for Fear, but if its something I can wait for I get it off Zest, I don't steal it.

537055 2007-03-31 02:07:00 I have downloaded plenty of gear, Much more then most of you could comprehend, Hell, I had over 1000 games for my Amiga 500 before most of you were born (ok, I didn't download those ones) but Piracy is theft.

There is no argument that changes that fact, When I have pirated gear I have been thieving, When you do it you are also thieving, Its a pretty simple concept, Getting on a high horses doesn't change the fact.

Though I will reject the argument that it takes a big team and lots of money so the prices need to be high, If we look at music we see some albums cost less then 100 grand while others cost upwards of 20 to 30 million, take years to create and have the work spread over dozens of people, Big budget product is not a new concept, But the album that cost $3000 to make will sit along side then ablum that cost 40 million and they will be priced near exactly the same, around $30 dollars.

Why?

Becuase thats the accepted price, Likewise games retail in NZ for around $100 because thats the accepted price, Its not related to the production budget, Its what they think the market will accept.

A good case in point is the game GTR 2, released in Europe, NZ, Aussie as a full price top shelf game, released in America where they ignore everything that isn't Nascar as a budget game, less then 1/3rd of the shelf price of other games.

537056 2007-03-31 02:32:00 I'm not arguing with you Metla that it's stealing, I'm just saying that it's the prices that help drive the piracy. I do understand the process that goes into making games, and the high costs that can be involved, but I also think that the pricing system is a legacy left behind from the old cartridge days, when games were ROM based and the cartridges themselves weren't too cost effective. Now with DVD's, CD's and especially online systems such as Steam you'd expect prices to be lower. bizzack (7739)
537057 2007-04-01 16:26:00 I only have a couple of games I didn't pay for (2 games i borrowed off a mate, and one old school game i downloaded because I couldn't fidn it anywhere else) the rest I've always bought, most were brand new, but since going to Uni I've waited until the game was on special (e.g. gpstore stock taking) so that they are alot cheaper.
