537679 2007-04-02 10:50:00 Oh my god...

My flatmate brought a new Dell laptop 6 weeks ago and it is just a piece of crap. She got the sooped up processor but the phone salesperson said that 512 ram would be fine. Whatever the fault is the laptop runs like a dog. It is effectively an expensive doorstop.

There is no friggen choice either; you can't buy a new pc laptop without it. I suspect the problem is to do with the DRM polling the hardware constantly?

MS suck! Is it possible to organise a class action law suit?

537680 2007-04-02 10:53:00 According to the EULA (well at least for windows xp) you can return Windows for a refund, as long as you haven't opened the shrink wrap. Dannz (1668)
537681 2007-04-02 11:00:00 If only, no it is pre-loaded onto the laptop and she has had it for 6 weeks already Blade2 (6577)
537682 2007-04-02 11:03:00 It doesnt matter if its pre-loaded. it always is.
and time doesnt matter as long as it hasnt been opened.

(i think - someone back me up/correct me please)

537683 2007-04-02 11:04:00 If it runs that badly then return it under the warranty so that it can be checked for faults.

That doesn't sound normal.

537684 2007-04-02 11:08:00 LOL, yes Hollywood demanded DRM polling video, output and hard drive something like 300 times a ms in order to license HD.
1Gb is a given with Vista, though they do sell Basic with 512Mb

537685 2007-04-02 11:08:00 Give it an extra 512mb of ram and go to microsoft updates and you will be away,As microsofts updates are very much up to date for vista to help it to run smoothly, Trust me it worked for me. Hitech (9024)
537686 2007-04-02 11:15:00 512MB for Vista? - shoot that salesman. I don't care if it will run with 512MB, it will run so much better with 1GB that it is a foolish saving not to add the extra RAM. Biggles (121)
537687 2007-04-02 11:21:00 remember the XP systems that came out with 128meg ram? or the 98/ME systems that came out with 32 or 64 meg of ram ?? tweak'e (69)

Hey, I had to provide a bit of support to an XP system running with 256MB RAM. The PC ran like treacle that was being sucked through a long straw by someone suffering from asthma.

But was my advice to just buy some damn RAM followed? Hell no, that would mean spending money ...
