| 737850 | 2009-01-12 08:42:00 | I think I will buy a new hard drive and do a fresh install of XP. Do the techs here have any anecdotal experience of which brand has the least failures out of Western Digital or Seagate? |

Who said Seagates have dropped their warranty -Depending on what type of drive it is will depend on length of warranty . From the segate site : How Long Does The Coverage Last? Our warranty periods are 1 year, 2 years, 3 years or 5 years from the documented date of purchase, depending on the type of product and where it was purchased . AND if the drive is an OEM drive : How Long Does the Coverage Last? Seagate will publish a warranty period for each product (the “Product”) as part of the Product and price list . The warranty period for each Product begins on the date of shipment to the OEM customer . For Product sold to a Seagate OEM customer (“OEM”), the standard warranty period is three (3) years for Notebook and Desktop drives and five (5) years for Enterprise and Nearline drives . Some of the shops tell the customer the drives only have 1 or 2 years warranty, when it fact they have more . |

| 737855 | 2009-01-12 09:55:00 | seen WD fail, seen seagate fail, ditto IBM maxtor etc. they all have models that fail. also depends on how they are setup to. some run real hot and need to be well cooled. |

| 737856 | 2009-01-12 10:15:00 | Western Digital now have a 5 year warranty on their "Black" range of drives. Seagate then WD are usually what I use but only because of the 5 year warranty. Will probably start using WD more now that they have it too. Never had any real problems with either but have had failures from both. I remember a few years ago Seagate had a really bad run of failing HDs, people have short memories :lol: |

| 737858 | 2009-01-12 20:24:00 | Last month I ordered a 500 Gb Seagate with a 5 yr warranty. It was a dud from the start (there is a thread here on the problems I had with it). It was replaced and the new one is OK. Most PF1ers would go for Seagates, but I have a feeling that WD is near equivalent to Seagate these days. Get the one with the longest warranty. 5 yrs. |

Because it made people suspicious they changed it back. Probably have the same effect this time round. I'd still get either, just pick the cheaper of the 2. |
