540407 2007-04-12 08:46:00 it was on tv3 again. one thing still gets me tho.....

why do these people buy 2nd hand cars and don't check the tires? even ones that where told they where snow tires didn't bother replacing them. surly these people should be nominated for the darwins award ?

its quite common for 2nd hand cars to have cheap rubbish or worn tires on them. not uncommon for people to remove their good tires and fit cheap rubbish before selling the vehicle so they can put their good tires on their new vehicle. any vehicle you buy you go through it with a fine tooth comb, thats normal practice. we have even found a handbrake cable pin missing before today.

people expecting to buy perfect 2nd hand vehicles?? consumerism for ya!

540408 2007-04-12 08:54:00 they spent all the cash on the deposit for the car. Another $500 - $600 for a set of tyres is not possible. wotz (335)

That's cheaper than a funeral by a long way.

Snow tyres? Useless, they gotta be rubber. ;)

540410 2007-04-12 09:31:00 by the look of some of those cars you should be able to get something for $200 a set, even if it has to be on HP. cheaper than a funeral. having said that look at all those driving at high speed down the motorway on space savers.

mind you there hasn't been a lot of actual detail of the crashes which dosn't help.

540411 2007-04-12 09:39:00 What are these "snow tyres"? Studded tyres already fail WOF inspections. PaulD (232)
540412 2007-04-12 09:41:00 I saw someone today driving on a flat space saver

At least it wasn't on the motorway

just tires with tread and compound designed for snow. not spikes etc. quite comman to see M+S (mud and snow) tires around exspecially on 4x4's.

its just like driving around on mud tires except snow tires would overheat quickly. i wouldn't be suprised if they find those snow tires had delaminated due to the heat.

540414 2007-04-12 09:58:00 A lot of people are not as clued up as us, and when buying a car off a dealer with a new warrant they are under the impression that all is ok. If the tyres pass then they are deemed to be safe. Parents brought a car with snow tyres on it and never had a problem with them. Most people would never have a problem with them. It's the same with retreads, I would never touch them, but does that make them unsafe for there intended purpose. plod (107)
540415 2007-04-12 10:09:00 Parents brought a car with snow tyres on it and never had a problem with them. well that might be another factor in it. from what was shown on tv it looked like fairly young drivers who probably are not that gentle with their driving and simply went over the tires limits, just like running on a poor set of tires. however that still doesn't explain fishtailing while going straight, especially with a front wheel drive car. tweak'e (69)
540416 2007-04-12 23:10:00 What I'd like to know is how the hell they pass a WOF in the first place? And also (not that I am planning on buying a heap of crap), what do snow tyres look like? I would recognise space savers but not snow tyres! Beemer (6956)
