| 539078 | 2007-04-09 00:57:00 | Does anyone have any first hand experience with the Pioneer/Wharfedale package on offer from Noel leemings? Presuming I'm quite happy with the audio quality/volume (hey, Its a lounge room in a family home not a barnyard or a full sized theatre) is there anything about teh components I should be aware of? And, Does anyone else offer a similar package at a cheaper price?...without desending into junk. |

| 539080 | 2007-04-09 01:06:00 | If they are the Diamond 9 speakers then they always get rave reviews in magazines such as Tone. It is hard to tell from the information supplied in that link. The Diamond 9 speakers are in this system: www.noelleeming.co.nz The extra cost could mean that the system you linked to do not include the Diamond 9 or it simply ahs a higher speccd receiver. Go and have a look, take in an Iron Maiden CD or DVD and crank it up in store. :D Anything cheaper than that will be descending into junk. Hell - without looking at it that system you speccd to may itself be junk. It'spretty damn cheap. Of course - one mans junk........ |

The Pioneer receiver could be the weak link, but having said that Pioneer are historically a hi-fi manufacturer. Their receivers tend to have the power over stated (even the RMS power, 5 channels driven) so if you are playing that 70's rock (Deep Purple:thumbs: ) loud, it may start to run out of puff. Once the amp starts to clip, your tweeters are at risk (too much power is better than too little). I also recommend trying a system in your own home but I don't think Noel Lemming will be too happy when you try to return it having found it doesn't meet your requirements. As above, take in some cd's and give it a thrash. Receivers date pretty quickly these days, so you can pick up better sounding receivers off Trademe, if you find after 6 months, that it falls short of your requirements presuming you are not in the latest receiver developments. |

| 539082 | 2007-04-09 02:04:00 | Well, Seeing as the home is populated by Mrs Metla and 1.2 kids the system would never be getting thrashed, It would primarly be used for DVD playback and infrequent mid-volume CD playback. And, I already have a fair amount of money invested in speakers, The amp just died. Hell, I only went in to price a new amp, Lmao, Now Im looking at a comple replacement system. What I really want to make sure of is that I don't buy a lemon. and I see the latest Retravision flyer has a similar system for $1299.... |

Surely not....  musta batted his eyelids :D I got the previous model receiver about 2 years (?) ago and it had the diamond speakers... I'd bet those in the 1st NL ad are NOT diamond range, but if you're only buying the receiver then no prob. I also got the sub but useless... power switch on the back at the bottom (worst place to get to) green led on front super annoying, bad hum when you crank the 'gain' knob up. I've had Pioneers from way back (hell- I am ancient!) including the lovely valve amp. I think their build quality is going down hill and I bought the most craptastic CD player (with CD changer where you had to pile the CDs upside down in the changer) The receiver I've got does the job no fuss. I have heard that the motors on the volume control knob are a bit dodgy, but had no probs with mine at all. I don't play Iron Maiden as my tastes are more refined... Black Fag and Goria Gaynor come to mind, but Mrs M shouldn't have any trouble cranking it up when she doing the vacuuming  |

| 539085 | 2007-04-09 03:00:00 | Not at all, They merely gave me a price on an amp, Which I already knew before heading in, Then I asked to be shown the complete system I had spied on their website. Then I went into Harvey Normans, who once again demonstrated that unless you brought along a case load stupidity then you have no reason to talk to their salespeople. Apparently the mere fact that their amp they chose to show me was marked down from $700 to $400 was meant to impress me so much I would just buy it, after being told it was an "excellent" item I asked for some specs, which caused much consternation with the result the sales-person went out back to "find" them and never returned, so i wandered out. Crazy, I personally don't care in the slightest if an item has been marked down by hundreds, all it means is they couldn't sell them at that price, or that they want to dump old stock. In no way does it mean its worth buying. Anyhow, That aside I just returned from Retravision, They didn't have the model in the flyer so I was shown an horrendous looking silver system with 326 speakers, Sounded crap, and a Sony system that I was told by the salesman that he owned, and had gone flawlessly for 4 years. Right, A 4 year old model for current prices, Hell no, At which point I produced my CD which again sounded like crap on their system, Though probably because the salesman had no idea how I prefer my audio... ...But god damn it, Anyone who turns a sub up load enough to dominate the sound rather then enhance it needs to be shot, multiple times. |

| 539086 | 2007-04-09 03:16:00 | Metla- I used to sell the damn things (don't hold that against me!) It's no different to buying a computer: speakers= monitor amp=cpu/ram/vid card etc If you already got good speakers- buy the best amp you can. If you want the whole deal- pay big bucks or compromise (choke) If you want to be able to hear in exquisite detail Garth Brookes tonsils resonating on the high notes- get a 2nd mortgage |
