538701 2007-04-06 23:53:00 I like D.I.Y.
When I want more timber I have the choice of a lot of locations to get it.
No problem.
But when I want more metal (i.e. Lt alloy angles, steel angles, plate etc)
I am in difficulty. I rarely use metal so my stock lasts for ages and when I went to my usual stockist found things have changed. It was at one time an open area you could browse in and they had lots of off cuts etc. You just helped yourself like in a supermarket, then took it to the "checkout"
When I went recently I innocently wandered in - and despite my advanced years got shouted out and told to get behind the counter. Where I found I had to know what I wanted, order it and get at least $50 worth minimum.
Is there anywhere in Christchurch where I can once again browse and pick up what I want?

538702 2007-04-08 22:13:00 Sounds like a wrecker who I went to see a few weeks ago. You are not allowed to "browse". You have to know exactly what you want. As the owner said in a email to me after I complained to the owners of the business "my business is not a museum", - pardon, its a wreckers.

Try and find another supplier that will allow you to browse. If not, you will have to change your purchasing ways.

In my case, I have to use the internet (as he is the only one in town) so thats the only browsing I can do.

He labelled me as a "time waster". I could have spend hundreds of dollars with his business. Boy there are some jerks in business.

Yep. That is just what I am trying to do. No luck so far in finding one though.

538704 2007-04-10 07:16:00 I have an idea that you have a problem, Thomas. I've been told that Wakefields don't even cut stuff now. :( (Smiths City Market do have some aluminium sections in their building supplies department(tube, square and angle in 1m and 2m lengths; other hardware shops might have some similar products). I would try having a talk to some companies metalworking which buy in bulk, and have offcuts (and mistakes). They might sell you the quantities you need from their bins. Another possible source would be the scrap dealers, who come and empty the offcut/scrap bins. :D Graham L (2)
538705 2007-04-10 23:29:00 Graham you guessed right. It was Wakefields (I think) that I used to get the stuff.
I am a little surprised some firm hasn't realised there is a (small) demand for some sort of "supermarket style" selling of metal.
Your comment about Smiths City is noted - I must admit I hadn't thought of them - I must have a browse. Actually I was looking for flat steel preferably enamelled plate - thin and about 4 inches wide. I bought some (from Wakefields) years ago, and made bookends out of it - very successful they were and I decided I needed more.
Not exactly a world problem so I'll just keep looking around. I do wonder how the schools, particularly small ones, manage for their workshops - if they still teach that.

538706 2007-04-12 07:28:00 For thin prepainted strip, maybe you could try one of the crowds which make continuous guttering on site. They start with a big reel of flat strip and squirt it through a forming machine. Graham L (2)
