Oh god... its the holidays.......... bring on the school kids

(kidding... kinda...)

If Avatars are forced upon us can we at least wait till after the school holidays? You know they will come, you know they will spam the forum, and you know they abuse the avatars.

Exactly.

Yay for school holidays.. (yes i know im a school kid, but im not talking about people like me who actually contribute all the time, and don't just appear during the holidays, due to lack of anything better to do ;) )

I WAS going to abstain from this vote, till I checked out who voted which way, and noted:
a) that the vote was tied; and
b) Scott (who has an avatar) voted against them (rather ironic I think)

So I figured the only decent thing to do was vote yes

Yeah but I only did that to screw with the numbers.

I'm like that.

Just like how I said I hate avatars when really I love them.

:waughh:

Signatures are permitted and you can see the result;, some abuse the system.
Fairfax are allowed commercials, and the privilege is abused. that's why we could have the option to turn them off, and for ads get adblock

The whole country has gone to the dogs since we stopped eating the missionaries. ;) LOL

Do you not have the option to approve avatars before they can be used? Another forum I belong to does that. You submit your avatar, bribe the admin/mods copiously, and a few days later you avatar appears.

Of course that forum is nowhere near as well run as this one, apart perhaps from that small feature. :D

but as mentioned earlier someone would have to sit there approving them, and then someone would still find something to be offended about, and ofcourse rather than disabling/adblocking it they'll moan and ***** untill the feature gets disabled again..... i still reckon we should get avatars.

i agree with metla; unless the question is "do you want an avatar which you MUST display" there is no reason to say no

and school holidays are a good thing: no school traffic :D
then again if you spend all day on this forum:rolleyes:....

....Not necessarily. A few forums I have seen have a set list of avatars the users can choose from. These avatars can be themed (some have movie themed avatars for instance), or can be random avatars that the users get to choose from that are also non-offensive.
Maybe worth considering ...

Awww hell no!

I'd rather not have one than have to pick from a pre-set list.... no offence intended towards you, but I hate it when forums do that

I think a free trial, specifically during the school holidays just to see what kind of things we'd be dealing with makes sense. If it's really bad then get rid of it again, we can have a vote at the end of a week and see if there's anything highly problematic about having them, if not - they can stay :D

Yuck..One forum that I am on has this and they use silly little cartoon type
Characters. I would rather let people choose their own and I think most people are muture another to choose an appropriate avatar.

539932 2007-04-11 21:04:00 Perhaps we can elect a couple of members to do the moderation of avatars just in case something really bad goes wrong.

Cheers :)

Im in with that

Do you want avatars or not?? stop trying to subterfuge this thread!!! :D

539934 2007-04-11 21:31:00 Yes yes - bring on the avatars. But what about copyright problems?

Bruce has Joseph Stalin. Doubt if the KGB will knock on his door at 3 AM, seeing that the USSR no longer exists.

But lets say Laura or Jen chooses the PF1 pin up girl:

How do the mods cope with copyright photos?

I doubt if any of us would be happy with a choice of e.g., a dozen cartoon characters.

Lastly, maybe avatars could be used only by those who have never been banned / been problematical to the mods, or who have been a member for at least a year, or with over a 1,000 posts.
