737778 2009-01-13 05:35:00 I was more interested it what your thoughts were than actually completely killing a HDD. Thanks for the input

If I do not want any person recovering data then I would not give them the hard drive in any event.

Formatting a drive only stops the merely curious.

You can encrypt folders or drives which would make the data unavailable to most without a password.

737779 2009-01-13 05:38:00 It was more a rhetorical question to get peoples thoughts and I'm sure it will help people to know what actually can still be achieved with a supposedly clean drive gary67 (56)
737780 2009-01-13 05:57:00 Open the sucker up and take to the platter with an angle grinder - once you have the platter looking decisively "dead" data recovery should be impossible.

On a more serious note, a few passes of Darik's Boot and Nuke (DBAN) should do nicely

So in other words you do not actually need help do you as you know already!

737782 2009-01-13 06:07:00 Well it's nice to have what I suspected confirmed so yes it has been helpful, I don't just go on blind faith what I read in the press I try and do some research to confirm or or not what I have read gary67 (56)
737783 2009-01-13 09:07:00 Has anyone read this article? (blogs.pcworld.co.nz) I was wondering about what it says, I use Ccleaner to clean my PC and empty the recycle bin if I have sensitive docs I want gone. I have set it to the setting DOD 3 passes.

You can use the Guttmann method which is 35 passes.

737784 2009-01-13 09:48:00 Take the drive out and get creative  The better half came up with this great ?? idea the other day when I was having a clean out, she saw a dismantled HDD on the bench ewwww shiny - Is it stuffed ?? - Yep - how many you got - I pointed to a box under the bench - stuffed drives - then she got that look - you know the one that you dare not ask about - next thing I know I have to find another 12-15 drives to kill - something about a "funky" set of mirrors :groan:
:help:  attached is what we have so far.
