538690 2007-04-14 06:38:00 RF is the aerial to get a signal, its not for the sound.

It'll only be mono if the recorded sound / video is mono and the equipment you're using doesnt support stereo/Nicam.

OTOH if you were recording straight from a TV with a Nicam VCR and the TV was Nicam it should play back in Nicam/stereo.

Which on normal TV, channels 1,2,3 Juice,C4, and ALT TV support.

538693 2007-04-14 07:22:00 your post has nothing to do with connecting sky to vcr or anything to do with my post.

tv aerial signal is passed straight through, if its nicam it stays nicam. sky sat decoder rf output is mono only, thats due to nicam ENCODERS being @#$% exspencive. (it would easly double the price). afaik no ones makes a video or sat receiverwith nicam output.

538694 2007-04-14 14:06:00 The easiest way to connect a VCR to sky is to connect one of the non-RF outputs on the sky box to the A/V-in on the VCR. Then just record from the A/V channel.

My photo shows RCA sockets: www.imagef1.net.nz
Why not just connect the Sky RCA's to the VCR RCA's?
This would be easier than spending $40 for SCART to RCA-vcr.

This would be easier than spending $40 for SCART to RCA-vcr.Indeed it would - it was Bob that suggested using the SCART output, not myself. I did however describe what the SCART outputs looked like in case the RCA was taken (possibly by the TV). Since the picture was posted, that has proved not to be the case.

Speedy: You're correct in that RF is an aerial signal, although note that it's not the aerial itself. However it most certainly can carry sound. How else do you think the TV manages to have sound with its images? The Sky box and the VCR provide RF outputs, which do include both video and sound - you're not limited to only plugging an aerial into that jack.

538696 2007-04-16 09:56:00 Dumb question, but must ask it just to be sure (85 yr old father in law goes ballistic if problems arise): Sky would be received on a a TV channel, rather than the AV, right? If say it is channel 4, I need to set the VCR to channel 4, correct? Strommer (42)
538697 2007-04-16 11:28:00 The Sky RCA AV Video and Audio fed into into the VCR AV and Audio will show the Sky channel being viewed, but the Video must be set to record from that AV input at all times not "a channel". No need for the SCART adapter.

Using the RCA connectors on the Sky box will in no way interfere with the normal Sky operation.

And tweak'e is correct with satellite sky, RF out is Mono.

538698 2007-04-19 00:40:00 Yesterday I connected the VCR to the SKY box using RCA plugs.
It works! The volume of the recorded tape (when I view it at home) is around 25% less and there is some hum which is noticeable during silent moments i.e. no talking or music on the program. The hum may be do to the new/old VCR that I am now using at home - this I got off a mate and it is better than our old VCR so the old one is over at father-in-law's place taping Sky. If the hum is coming only from taped Sky programs then I will use clip leads to connect the Sky box and VCR and TV. If this does not work I will try a DSE Scart--RCA plug and return it if that does not work. BTW, the VCR is mono audio and Sky has an RCA marked 'mono' so I am using that plus the video lead as well of course.

The other odd thing that I should have anticipated is since father in law has a wide screen TV, Sky produces a pic in that mode. We don't have wide screen but our TV has a picture adjustment to squash the pic to normal.

Thanks everyone for the assistance.
