2007-04-12 17:06:00 | Just how long does it take to pass a kidney stone..and I tried to Google it...you won't want to hear the results from THAT! I am just asking for anecdotal stories here...no blood-n-guts stuff. Tell me what happened to your Uncle Fritz or grandma... My wife has been to a doctor and he confirmed the situation, but offered no window of time or opportunity for when to get nervous if things weren't going well or at what speed they should be happening. It's kinda like childbirth thru your nose, to hear her tell it...lasting so far four days.

2007-04-12 19:22:00 | My one (the size of a grain of wheat) took 6 agonising weeks to pass :o :o :o | Zippity (58) | |
2007-04-12 19:36:00 | Have had 2 in the past3 years. Both have passed through overnight. Small ones give the pain. Big ones just sit in the kidney as they are to big to pass through. Have had gall stones long time ago and feel that the pain from that was worse. Cure for kidney stones... drink lots of beer!!! (My idea, not what the doctors say) Ken Ken

2007-04-12 21:40:00 | Can anyone tell me how you know you have one, and how you know when it has 'passed' . Does a bell ring and angels sing . . . or does it just riccochet around the bowl?

2007-04-12 21:50:00 | The first one I passed went "Ping" on the porcelain. ;) Second one, don't know? Ken

2007-04-13 00:22:00 | Can anyone tell me how you know you have one, and how you know when it has 'passed' . Does a bell ring and angels sing . . . or does it just riccochet around the bowl? Well . . . I am waiting for her to retract her claws, stop crying and complaining that she inherited all these bad things from me . . . . . . like grey hair and swollen ankles, and a sore back and now kidney stones . . . . . . while she mopes around the house holding her stomach and looking really pitiful . . . like a Keene poster child . . . . . . . . and eventually she'll get back to her self of telling me how much I ruined her life . . . . No . . wait! that's not any different from the condition she is in right now . The way to tell you have a kidney stone is the awful back ache about a week before the REAL PAIN SHOWS UP . The real pain is like pulling a ball of steel wool thru your nose with a piece of barbed wire attached to a powerful, but very slow turtle . . . only the pain is much lower . . . yup . . down there! It goes on forever . . . and seems like your heart will beat itself to death . The heart rate increases with the pain waves and makes you think this is the "big one" and you forgot to make out your last will and testament . The hip and leg on the side of the stone as it passes out can get pretty numb and tingle-y . The abdomen gets very sore and although she says she can see it, I cannot detect any swelling . Attitude is a whole different story . She says she has none . . . I differ . There MAY be blood in the urine . . . but likely not unless the "stone" is barbed or has a lot of sharp points . This is a special kind of stone and causes a lot of pain and damage, but actually allows the urine to flow pretty good past it . If there is a fever with the condition . . then get to a doctor quickly . . . as most of the women here have at time had a NSU (or Non-Specific Urethritis) . . . . or a bladder infection because of their short plumbing . Infections can be deadly . . . don't mess around with it . Strangely, men are the ones who get this most . Maybe because we eat things that women don't . Fat, beets, asparagus, high grain cereals and breads, too much calcium, colas and other soft drinks . . . and tea is also a very potent problem-maker . The jury's out on coffee though . It is a good diuretic and has an acid content to melt the stones . . . but who knows yet . I personally disobey all those points . . I like grease dripping off my elbows as I eat very rare red meat, love asparagus, beets and high-grain content in almost anything . Tea is just an occasional thing for me . . but coffee is about 4 cups a day . . . don't know the metric equiv . Poor water consumption is the biggest cause and the tropics are the biggest area of incidence . Only SOME stones respond to high-acid content fluids like cranberry juice or pomegranate juice . Those would be the calcium types . . the others aren't affected too much as they too are acidic in nature and won't therefor dissolve . I have been doing a lot of Googling and Yahooing to get what info I have so far . The time factor is what I need to know . . . the fields need plowing and I just got her harness all cleaned up from last year . . . she needs to get better soon .

2007-04-13 01:02:00 | Thanks for that Joe, as per usual- way TMI :stare: I can assume that the sore back and 'giving birth to a tennis ball with spikes on it' was just constipation and unchewed nut pieces as it came out the poo-rinary tract and not the you-rinary tract  By the way- if you are a male everything is your fault . It is a cross we mere men must bare in silence :groan:

2007-04-13 05:28:00 | These days I thought an ultrasonic beam was used to "hammer"/shatter them into smaller pieces that can be passed more easily. Ask your Doc about it, Joe. I know one or two people who have had this problem and just waited till nature took its course, and they suffered excruciating pain, not funny at all.
