538680 2007-04-06 23:28:00 I have a spare VCR and am thinking of connecting it to my father in law's Sky so we can see the History and Discovery programs. I know nothing about Sky connections. I could probably figure out the connections but my father in law is 85 yrs old and if anything gets messed up he goes ballistic. He would not mind pressing the Record button for me but the VCR cannot affect his Sky viewing.

So is it straightforward to connect?

Hope this does not get posted twice. The first try did not work.

538681 2007-04-07 00:59:00 Yes, it's usually pretty simple. Most sky boxes tend to have multible A/V outputs (ours has three sets plus an RF out); sometimes these outputs are programmible. Often they will be SCART, so you may need an adaptor. The easiest way to connect a VCR to sky is to connect one of the non-RF outputs on the sky box to the A/V-in on the VCR. Then just record from the A/V channel. Erayd (23)
538682 2007-04-07 02:26:00 BUT you can only record the channel you are watching. So this may inconvenience your father in law if he wants to watch a channel other than the one you're recording. roddy_boy (4115)

Thanks guys. Since he watches the History and Discovery channel, there is no problem, and even if he records only once a week then that is ok.

If the TV can be left as is, unchanged, then it will work. But if he has to switch to the AV channel it may be too complicated. I will go over there soon and see if there is a scart socket or whatever, then will get back here. I am hoping to just leave the VCR on all the time, then when he watches a decent program all he would have to do is press RECORD on the VCR or VCR remote.

538684 2007-04-07 04:57:00 Provided there is a spare output on the sky box, the TV can be left as-is.

SCART sockets look like a square-ish thing with two rows of 10 holes each, about 45mm long and 12mm high.

538685 2007-04-07 05:24:00 For us we can use AV or RF.

AV can be used from the TV. But the TV has to be on I think.

To use RF. TV can be turned off with the VCR on timer record so when we go out we can record with the TV screen turned off.

You can choose AV channel on the VCR or designate a number channel via the RF port.

538686 2007-04-07 06:34:00 use a spare AV output on the decoder going to the AV input on the video. IF your video is mono then its best to use a stereo to mono adaptor.

you can use RF ie aerial connection. you can tune a channel on the video to it (uhf band). however due to problems such as overloading and muiltable frenquencies AV is preferred on RF anyday. also RF is only mono sound.

538687 2007-04-07 07:15:00 also RF is only mono sound.

Really?? Learn something new every day :-)

538688 2007-04-14 06:20:00 Took me awhile to get over to my father in law's.
Have a look at the back of the Sky box:

Would it work if I connect the VCR to the RCA sockets?
Strommer (42)
538689 2007-04-14 06:34:00 Well as far as I can see, the easiest way would be to use the SCART output labeled VCR  :D You can get SCART to RCA cables, something like this (www.dse.co.nz) should do the job The_End_Of_Reality (334)
