541271 2007-04-15 18:39:00 The Internet "works well in many situations but was designed for completely different assumptions," said Dipankar Raychaudhuri, a Rutgers University professor overseeing three clean-slate projects. "It's sort of a miracle that it continues to work well today."

So..whats that mean?

"The network is now mission critical for too many people, when in the (early days) it was just experimental," he said.

The Internet's early architects built the system on the principle of trust. Researchers largely knew one another, so they kept the shared network open and flexible — qualities that proved key to its rapid growth.

But spammers and hackers arrived as the network expanded and could roam freely because the Internet doesn't have built-in mechanisms for knowing with certainty who sent what.

(this is a link) We gonna burn it all down and start all over again...right? (www.msnbc.msn.com)

541272 2007-04-15 22:12:00 "They" are already knocking down the old internet. The principal weapons are IE, OE, ME, XP, - - -. ;) :D R2x1 (4628)
541273 2007-04-15 23:19:00 I actually like the sound of a clean slate for the Internet. To visit a site and know that they are authentic would be great, as it is most of the sites you visit these days are quite dodgy ..... or is it just me.:illogical The big problem of course is not having access to it while they clean things up and the cost of it as well although I do think in the long run it just makes sense. At the moment its kind of like a huge rubbish bin ... if you have a good look through you may find something worth while but more likely its all crap. (not that I look through rubbish bins, but you get my point.:D never-u-mind (6500)
