Just disconnect everything else and start the update CD. at the menu, run the autodetect utility.

If it doesn't detect your drive then you'll have to connect it internally normally.

If you're worried then connect it internally to start with

739465 2009-01-30 10:45:00 Has anyone got a failed Seagate drive. Apparently 30% - 40% of the ones that require the update have been failing! ISPCSR (14530)
739466 2009-01-30 19:25:00 I successfully updated my 2 x 500GBs. :) bk T (215)

Yes, that's why there is an update. To stop them failing (well, from the firmware issue anyway. can't stop them from failing due to anything else)

Did you do it through E-Sata?

Yup, and I found that the hdd is noticeably quieter after the firmware update.

What I mean to say is does anyone have a failed one right now because they cannot be updated once they have failed.

Data recovery company's are charging people anywhere from $500 - $1500 to recover the Data and I am just trying to gauge whether there are many people in this boat as I know how to recover the Data without charging those ridiculous fees.

I know the forum rules, so I'm not offering, just trying to get an idea of demand.

739470 2009-01-30 21:58:00 I imagine someone with the right tools (read: Seagate) can recover the failed ones.

I updated mine as soon as I knew about the problem (luckily I was too late for the first two updates that would have probably stuffed my drive)

If you live in the US you can get free data recovery from Seagate themselves.

Isn't Seagate offering free data recovery for affected users?
Out of curiosity, what method would you use to recover data in this situation?

It has been widely reported that they are but I'm yet to see any evidence of this.

I create a serial connection to the hard drive and with the right commands can unlock the hard drive. OS and Bios are kept out of the equation.
