541704 2007-04-17 13:48:00 3rd one in recent months. :waughh: What should I do? :dogeye:

Always around 10 kph over. Doesn't seem to learn.
Instead of the fines I could've bought a new HD, thumb drive, mp3 player, etc.

Help !
I would just go out and buy those items, how could she complain when she blows $70 a pop on a speeding ticket.

541705 2007-04-17 17:00:00 I once worked in an auto repair shop that had loan cars for the customers while theirs were being repaired .

To keep them from speeding, the owner used a screw-type hose clamp to attach an old wheel weight to the drive shaft near the differential .

At most any speed it set up a bad vibration, making the driver fear something was wrong and kept the speed down to a minimum . :horrified

He also placed a resistor in the fuel gauge circuit to make them think the tank was near empty . They would then drive to a station and add fuel so they could drive it .

Many times the tank was so full they couldn't get a 1/2 gallon in . . . and they'd complain that there was something wrong with the gauge . :D

But . . . the wheel weight thing is a good idea . If she complains, just tell her you'll get to it real soon . Leave it at that .

541706 2007-04-17 20:29:00 Geez Steve! Simply ask her to slow down . She has a mind????

Greg, et . al . , don't take this too seriously . I'm looking for some humour and creativeness . I will read this thread to her . Other techniques have not worked, e . g . talking to her diplomatically and politely, or sternly, or loudly, or quietly . And then there was the really nice old police sergeant that stopped by the house one day to speak with her about her driving - that was three years ago .

Basically she just day dreams when driving and does not think about what speed she is going .

She has no idea I have posted this thread . I'll choose the time to read these postings when our good friends (who have a great sense of humour) are here and we will all have a great laugh . And maybe the idea of being more aware of her speed will lodge in her memory .

541708 2007-04-17 20:34:00 If you want her to stop speeding ... tape all those ads that have children dying or people who can no longer move or are in wheelchairs or those ads where mothers are standing in the streets screaming cause her little kid gets hit by a speeding driver, make it good and long and then get her to sit down and watch it over and over and over and over and over again. If that doesn't work take her to any one of the main hospitals, im sure you will find a few victims of someone that had crashed or caused a crash due to speeding. Well worth the try :D ... I mean think of all that money ..... :stare:

Good points. Sobering stuff. Not funny (see my post above, to Greg) but very relevant. Thanks.

541710 2007-04-17 21:39:00 To be pinged for doing 51kp/h and fined $70 would mean your mate was probably driving within an area that had a 30km/h temp speed limit

Just an observation, it may be wrong

yeah i had a think about that - its really the only think i can think of - he "cant recall" seeing road works or anything that needs a 30km\h limit - but we do have a lot of roadworks in our area so i think that was the case

541711 2007-04-17 21:52:00 She has no idea I have posted this thread . Lucky you! My missus often reads my threads here when I'm not around to see what's been on my mind! (Usually to see what the . . . . I've done this time to get myself banned!)

(Hi Missus Greg!) :p

541712 2007-04-17 21:56:00 as for 10kph speeding tickets

SPEED CAMERAS, like on poles or vans cannot get you for less that 10kph over (afaik). also they can't fine you if there's another car in the photo, and cannot result in demerit points

I seem to recall, when I got my first speed camera ticket years ago, that they only sent fines to the top 10% over the posted speed limit, over a given period of monitoring - this was the "official" information included with the ticket explaining the speed camera system. I don't know if that still applies, but presumably if 100 cars were clocked over the posted speed limit, and the fastest anyone went was 105kmh, then the fastest 10% would be fined, and you could possibly be fined for being only 5kmh over the limit.

I think you are right about other cars in the photo - if there's any doubt that the camera snapped your car's speed, then they won't issue a ticket.

541713 2007-04-18 02:17:00 James, do you have a car or licence? You will probably find out why people speed soon enough once you got it :p also, what was telling SJ about the days?
Incidentally, as I have told you over MSN Messenger, I have just passed my learner's test today .

And not too surprisingly, there wasn't a single speed limit question in the test .

Cheers :)
