If you got 2x1GB = 2GB. You are a bit more limited with the 2 other slots. You could put in 2x4GB when the 4GBs are affordable.

These days some laptops are even sold with 3 or 4GB.

739293 2009-01-16 10:14:00 just wondering, what's the diff between OEM and retail versions of OS'es? As i understand it, one is distributed by manufacturers of pc's, the other directly from microsoft? 8ftmetalhaed (14526)
739294 2009-01-16 10:20:00 One condition of OEM, is you MAY have to buy some hardware .

It doesnt matter, what it is, or how much it costs .

You can buy either at a computer shop

739295 2009-01-16 17:47:00 Just be aware that using price spy often when you contact the shops for your 'deal' they no longer have any at that price. Price spy is a listing site only and if places don't keep their lists up to date you can end up chasing your tail. But it can still be useful make sure and read any reviews of places you are intending to buy from and also ask here. Ascent are good as are PB tech and computer lounge the latter 2 being in Auckland I think ask Speedy for shopping advice re Auckland gary67 (56)
739296 2009-01-16 20:23:00 And if you buy a system, its usually full of crap / trials of whatever.

And its slow as a snail

One option would be getting a local computer store to build one to your specs; did that recently and it had no crap/trial stuff on there, only a wallpaper advertising the store that was easily deleted.
Cost was probably less than a DIY build too, if you take into account the time it would take to source parts etc - certainly a lot cheaper than getting a comparable system from a chain store.
As for Vista, I've found the 64-bit version pretty stable, although I still use Ubuntu most of the time.

XP is very hard to find in shops but playtech still stocks them(SP3) i brought it off them 2-3 months ago) 166$ incl. postage but since you live in auckland you can just go to there albany showroom.
www.playtech.co.nz <--- link for xp

also for a pc system they have some nice upgrade boxes(which you would more than likely have to add on another 500-600$ for a new lc screen oem and speakers/keyboard) but heres one that i thought would suit your need fine.
