739281 2009-01-16 09:06:00 Just ask here for recommendations on parts Blam (54)
739282 2009-01-16 09:08:00 If you want more than 1 GB of ram, forget 98. It cant handle it

You'll need windows 2000 / XP + if you want 1 GB or more

739283 2009-01-16 09:11:00 Would it work with the dual core cpu's and insane gpu's even?

I'm putting together a parts list too using pricespy. I'll chuck up what i've got when I'm done.

739284 2009-01-16 09:15:00 Theres no point using an old OS, with new technology. And you still wouldnt be able to go over 1 GB of ram

And you wont be able to update it now anyway

And you may find it hard to find drivers for it. If you do install 98

739285 2009-01-16 09:17:00 Yeh I know.... I just HATE the idea of getting Vista. From what I've seen of my sister's laptop, it's impossibly slow, has very irritating interfaces, and is nothing at all like the traditional windows interface.

Anyway, should this copy and paste correctly, does this look like a relatively decent build?

EZ Cool 500W PSU $60.75
Cooler Master Elite 333 with no PSU $84.93
Asustek P5QL-PRO Intel P43 ATX Motherboard $172.13
ATI Radeon HD 4670 512MB PCI-Express $158.63
1GB DDR2-800 PC6400 SDRAM $19.81 x2 (or x4?)
Western Digital 320GB Serial ATA HDD $84.93
Intel Pentium E5200 dual core 2.5GHz 800FSB 2MB cache $144.79
Creative Sound Blaster 5.1 $21.10

739286 2009-01-16 09:20:00 Shops will probably still sell XP

You dont have to use Vista, just because its a new system

Where in NZ are you?

739288 2009-01-16 09:26:00 Everything you've selected is pretty good, I would get 2gb of RAm in Dual Channel instead of 4gb as 32bit Windows will only recognize 3.25gb of it anyways

If you get a good HSF later you can overclock that CPU alot.

Mobo is good, will provide room for upgrades

739289 2009-01-16 09:29:00 You can wipe the soundcard its onboard (the mobo has 8 channel sound) Speedy Gonzales (78)
739290 2009-01-16 09:33:00 Just wondering about OC'ing too... if done in small increments, would it affect stability and/or life of the system, providing it was suitably cooled if i did?
This system has OC'ing locked, so I've never been able to experiment :)
