2007-04-18 18:12:00 | secondly, other countries have gun laws similar to the US but still manage significantly lower murder rates Could it be because of population saturation? Look at most countries with the same guns-to-people ratios . . they aren't usually as sparsely populated as the US . . we have vast areas with gun-totin' people who never even see another person for a year or so . The very lack of people in the center of the US . . and I might add those who really need firearms to protect themselves and their cattle etc from predators, make the heavily populated areas with gun crimes and murders slide off the probability and actuarial charts . perhaps it's the people using the guns, not the guns themselves? then again without the guns they couldn't use them, and again if they wanted them they would still be able to get them legally or not . so it's a bit of a pickle really Totally agree here . . . let's enforce the laws that are on the books first and then se if they need to be rewritten or added to . This however does not address things like shoelace ( . abc . net . au/news/newsitems/200704/s1900791 . htm" target="_blank">www . abc . net . au) murders and drivers intent on suicide ( . org/home . html?" target="_blank">ashbusstop . org) by semi truck . thirdly, if you were the police, faced with a murder in a dorm, would you automatically think that the killer would reappear later that day to kill as many students as possible and then himself . and then act on that closing down a university and somehow removing thousands of students and staff from the area, at a horrendous cost to student, university and police? i know i wouldn't Excellent point . . hindsight is always 20/20 anyway . fourthly, why is the US the only place to have these things happen, NOT true . . there are numerous accounts of pretty much the same thing in Australia (I googled and found a few . . . ref them yourself) along with pathetic law suits like the guy who (successfully) sued a campervan manurfacturer after his campervan crashed when he put it on cruise control and went into the back to make a coffee . That's an urban legend and not true at all . . . check it out in Snopes ( . snopes . com/autos/techno/cruise . asp" target="_blank">www . snopes . com) . . . besides, the rumor was that he was Chinese, renting a motorhome anyway! finally, "only in america" Not quite, mate . . . check the happenstances in Germany, England, Australia and even the good ol' NZ headlines too . I did, and found a lot of simular things . . . although not on the same scale as THIS ONE . . . Notes: Since Australia's gun ban, armed robberies increase 45% ( . worldnetdaily . com/news/article . asp?ARTICLE_ID=15304" target="_blank">www . worldnetdaily . com) WHY RAPISTS & ROBBERS LOVE AUSTRALIA'S GUN-CONTROL LAWS ( . newswithviews . com/Turtel/joel39 . htm" target="_blank">www . newswithviews . com) Mass murder, mass confusion (As for this being a uniquely American disaster, mass shooting murders have happened in Canada, Scotland, Australia and elsewhere . And far from being totally a product of the United States, the gunman was, it turns out, a South Korean immigrant . ) ( . therecord . com/NASApp/cs/ContentServer?pagename=record/Layout/Article_Type1&c=Article&cid=1176871128085&call_pageid=1024322168441&col=1024322320546" target="_blank">www . therecord . com) The murder of overseas visitors in Australia ( . aic . gov . au/publications/tandi2/tandi316 . html" target="_blank">www . aic . gov . au) A man firing a shotgun killed two people and injured eight on Monday at a university campus in the Australian city of Melbourne, police and emergency services said . ( . people . com . cn/200210/21/eng20021021_105424 . shtml" target="_blank">english . people . com . cn) New Zealand multiple murder probed ( . iol . co . za/index . php?set_id=1&click_id=2024&art_id=nw20070403091414680C649423" target="_blank">www . iol . co . za) Teen to face trial for stepdaughter's murder ( . stuff . co . nz/4024076a11 . html" target="_blank">www . stuff . co . nz) It ain't a "US-thing" at all . . it is global . . . . find the common denominator and you've solved the situation . Don't just rear back and bellow that it's the cause and problem of somebody else, somewhere else, for some other reasons . This strikes us all . Your right to swing you fist ends at other people's noses .

2007-04-18 23:46:00 | fourthly, why is the US the only place to have these things happen, You must have been too young to have heard about the Port Arthur massacre in Tasmania then. That was worse than this one.

2007-04-18 23:47:00 | Ah c'mon Foxy... America gives out guns for less than the price of a cheap TV. Why shouldn't they expect gun related violence to occur. Oooh, I got a bite!! :D :D :D

2007-04-19 00:00:00 | SurferJoe. the majority of murders in NZ are not by firearm. Us kiwi's prefer a good stabbing or beating with a base ball bat or machette. Multiple murderers still use firearms because it is less time consuming, but for a 1 on 1 you can't beat a good stabbing:D | plod (107) | |

2007-04-19 08:06:00 | The TV stations are trying to wipe us out with terminal boredom. The government is apparently ensuring we go unencumbered by assets, and the general trend means we are not too sad about going. Life's tough. But at least some of the children are unsmacked.

2007-04-19 09:18:00 | Yep it's big news here. Someone remind me how many Americans killed in Iraq since 2003? It is less than the number of murders in DC.

2007-04-19 10:02:00 | 200 killed today in Iraq, Granted I dont think any of them were yanks, But are the lives of the locals worth less?, Is anyone outside their circle of association morurning for them? Im certainly not, And I'm not hypocritical enough to get upset about 30 dead yanks.
