739542 2009-01-18 01:10:00 Ok thanks for the replies. This is what I did this time. I booted up windows & ubuntu 8.10, set the static ip's dns & gateways on both computers (ubuntu is not quite as simple as xp lol) & still no internet. Pulled the plug on the router, left it for a minute, booted it again, pressed the reset button, went into the setup & reset it to default, saved it, unplugged it again, re booted it, set the username & password, changed the gateway ip to another number to match the computers & away from the default, adjusted the dhcp range down (don't need to cater for 50 dhcp connections) disabled the wireless (not using that bit yet) saved it & now it's all working. Maybe I ought to go back to the other forums I've seen & tell them too. All smiles here. It seems the router doesn't remember things properly unless it's power is removed & connected again

I take note of the wireless dropping. I havent seen that anywhere on the reviews, they all seem to rave about it's solid connection

739543 2009-01-18 04:00:00 Like you, I read the glowing reviews. Should have waited and listened to actual users. A search on wag160n wireless dropouts gets you a lot of reading!

e.g.
Read the customer reviews here www.cnet.com.au

forums.linksys.com

But, hey, I hope yours works fine. Its just that I have an unhappy customer with one I recommended from the reviews.

739544 2009-01-18 07:36:00 I noticed how hot mine got the first time I used it. I solved it by using a crystal cd cover opened up & placing the unit so the feet were on it. This gives about 5mm of space underneath & allows air to travel through the unit. Mines been on all day apart from the re-booting when sorting out the static ip stuff & it's just modestly warm. It hasn't dropped the connection as far as I know. I can't find anything in the log file about the connection. It shows 8128Kbps down & 160Kbps up. Maybe the overheating problem the other people have is a breathing problem. Phil B (648)
