2009-01-15 02:40:00 | Had a quick search and can find no help so far on PF1. I'm interested in VPN and have a bit of a handle on it but wondered if anyone knew the answers to these questions. At the moment my set up goes like this, if I'm not mistaken... PC->router->ISP/router->PC2 all along that route my ip address is visible, as you would expect. If I want to remain anonymous, I want to encrypt my packets, and mask my IP from the PC2. I would like to think that this could be done like this... PC->router (VPN+ encryption client)->ISP/router->VPN gateway->PC2 so in effect PC2 sees only the VPN server, and all packets apart from the TCP/UDP headers are encrypted. (hiding the contents from any packet sniffers) Am I on the right path with these... www.anchorfree.com http://wippien.com/ and is the way a real vpn works? Thanks.

2009-01-15 02:51:00 | Nah its dead easy to setup. Use either Hamachi or OpenVPN, though I s'pose (having a quick look at their site) that wippien would work. Never heard of it before and cant vouch for its security. Hamachi is real "point-and-click" done in 30 seconds kinda thing, but again you're trusting your security to somebody else. The whole idea of security is "trust" and "trustworthy" computing ... However I prefer the OpenVPN choice. Depending on your router make / model, you can have it host OpenVPN using the DD-WRT Firmware :) Ive got a couple of Asus WL-520GU routers doing just that! :)

2009-01-15 03:07:00 | Thanks Speedy, looked at that and found it a bit above my head. Found this- video.google.com very helpful. Thanks Chilling, looking at both now. The Hamachi doesn't route the packets thru its servers...am I mistaken in thinking that my IP will always be visible, I want to connect to PC2 but don't want them to see me, only be able to talk to me, if you get my drift.

2009-01-15 03:15:00 | Your IP will always be visible ... as their PC has to know where to route packets back to. Depending on what you're wanting to do, perhaps this may help: en.wikipedia.org(anonymity_network)

2009-01-15 03:55:00 | Thanks, Tor looks like a usefull tool and I'll research it a bit more. I think there could be a series of articles for NZ PCworld in this area. With the new law coming into effect soon, I think a lot more people will be interested in this sort of thing. I don't do anything particularly wrong on the net, but I do have a teenager and I don't want to be booted of the net because of him. So I'll be looking for avenues to prevent that. Thanks for the help.

2009-01-15 05:27:00 | ToR is definitely about anonymity, however its not designed to be used for a direct PC <-> PC link as you'd initially requested. I feel a new poll coming on ;)

So, he decided to go net cafes instead, and got infected with an autorun virus lol (twice). Getting MP3's with some P2P program. He was using a USB flash drive |
