740172 2009-01-19 00:01:00 From time to time, I need to simultaneously use virtual machines which are in VirtualPC and VirtualBox. I've found that running one at a time, or several VMs on the same virtualisation environment (i.e. 2x Virtualbox VMs at one time) works without any problems.

However, a while ago I tried running 1 VirtualPC instance, and 1 Virtualbox instance, which may have contributed to a BSOD I experienced shorty after.

Has anyone else a) tried this, and b) come across similar issues? I'm reluctant to try this again, in case I lose data as a result.

740173 2009-01-19 00:43:00 Is this on an AMD or intel CPU? In my experience, the AMD solution seems to be a bit less forgiving of multiple hypervisors using the CPU virtualisation features at the same time (think system hangs). Erayd (23)

740175 2009-01-19 01:26:00 Which OS?

Might be a conflict between the 2 programs in RAM...

740177 2009-01-19 03:18:00 No no, its because you are trying to run 2 different virtualisations of the same components...ie: cpu, memory, NIC.

Can you tell me why you need to run VirtualPC and Virtual Box?....Do you realise that VMWare (VW ware Server 1.08) is better than both?

I have a legacy VM in VirtualPC which I have not migrated across to VirtualBox yet. I will get around to this eventually, but at the moment it's not worth the effort.

I will be curious to see why you are so willing to assert that VMWare Server is better than VirtualBox or VirtualPC, before knowing what I actually use them for. If you can offer me some rational, well thought out explanation, then I will be happy to hear it.

As far as I'm concerned, VMWare Server is not better because it does not have (unless it has dramatically changed in the last 12 months):
- Seamless windows (VirtualBox)
- Drag and drop to desktop file transfer (VirtualPC)
- Mouse Pointer integration which actually works (Both)

740179 2009-01-19 04:06:00 I aggree with Solmeister regarding the 2 applications are competing and conflicting on resources.

Perhaps just choose your favourite app, and convert the other VM to that format.

eg. This post describes converting a VirtualPC VM to VirtualBox format:

Cheers - you and Solmeister are probably right. I'll have to find some time to do the migration, but I guess it must be done.

740181 2009-01-19 07:05:00 VMware even gives you the software to convert your VM.

As you desktop file dropping and seamless windows, I dont know if that is such bad thing. To me that's a security issue that has no place in a professional application, apart from which file transfer it can be setup properly anyway.

You could try Mokafive, thats more the portable multi-vm virtualisation application.
