739989 2009-01-18 08:28:00 I know this is a common problem but on my sisters laptop the DVD drive has used up the number of region changes and has been locked on region 1, what can we do to unlock it. It is a brand new HP Compaq 6710b laptop, running Windows Vista Business.

Thanks

739992 2009-01-18 08:45:00 It isn't the program thats not playing it it is the drive itself that is not playing it, in the drive settins under device manager under the region codes tab it has the number of times that it can be changed and the region that it is on. it is stuck on region 1 and i have just tried to put a region 4 (New Zealand),DVD in and the DVD player isn't even picking it up, even though it has played it before. stevensaaron (6348)
739993 2009-01-18 08:54:00 Its windows stopping you from changing it. Its the same as XP.

You can only change it 4 times

You'll have to use a 3rd party program

Or try VLC as mentioned :)

sort of, windows compares the region of the disk to that of a firmware chip on the player which says region 1 (in this case) formatting will not change this fact. basicly the only way is to take back to the manufactuer of the lappy they maybe able to reset otherwise replace the dvd drive

739997 2009-01-18 21:03:00 Well you can install a dvd firmware hack. BUT if it goes wrong, thats the end of your DVD. It'll kill it

But VLC should let you play it. I tried a Zone 1 DVD on here the other day with it.

XP didnt say anything about it, and didnt say it was going to change the Zone

DVD X player will also play any DVD, BUT it's not free.
