739971 2009-01-18 05:18:00 Okay, this is a dead simple enquiry - I'm just struggling to grapple with all the options available.

I need to replace the fan/heatsink on this Pentium 4, 3ghz, socket 478.

Can anyone recommend a decent replacement at a fair price (was hoping to sneak in below $50)?

Many thanks in advance

739972 2009-01-18 05:19:00 You will need to know which CPU's your mobo will support gary67 (56)
739973 2009-01-18 05:21:00 Why does it need replacing? Has the fan failed, is it underpowered or what?

Original Intel one just over $20 (www.pbtech.co.nz)

My basic problem is that over the past couple of months it has become noisy as hell - now unbearably so. This (pbtech.co.nz) is what is currently in there.

EDIT: same one you linked to!

Am I needlessly dubious about buying the same one again?

The bearings on the current fan are probably past it resulting in the build up in noise .

How long has the current one lasted vs how long do you plan on keeping a 478 .

Well given the warranty and the price why are you dubious?
How long did you have the last one?

739977 2009-01-18 05:53:00 It's probably been about...5 years now? That's a guess - it belongs to someone else in the house, so I'm not sure on the details.

The bearings problems sounds pretty likely, so I'll grab the OEM one again.

Only remaining question is - does anyone know whether it will have the thermal paste pre-applied, or will I need to buy seperately?

739978 2009-01-18 06:25:00 IIRC It should come with thermal paste stormdragon (6013)

The new heatsink and fan may come with thermal paste.
They usually do.

After lifting the heatsink and fan I would suggest you clean the CPU very carefully before refitting the cooler.
