543595 2007-04-23 21:26:00 Hydrogen a "fuel source"? ?
Yeah, Right.

543596 2007-04-23 22:25:00 Hydrogen a "fuel source" ? ?
Yeah, Right./me thinks you have hydrogen confused with the inert helium.
Hydrogen burns real good, but is not fun to store in any real quantity....

543597 2007-04-24 22:49:00 OK, show me the source of "Non-polluting Hydrogen Fuel".
Hydrogen is a fuel, but it involves another loss producing step in the production process.
The hydrogen is a means of storing and transporting energy produced elsewhere, so just like a secondary battery, it is not a "source", just a "stage" between production and utilisation.
;)
Wellington's "clean electric trains" could be considered to be coal fired steam trains that cunningly emit their smoke in Huntly. :(

543598 2007-04-24 23:02:00 I would like to do what I am morally and financially ABLE to do...but buying a hybrid of any kind is silly for me on so many levels.

I need to be able to go 800 miles in a single clip and return in the next 24 hours...
I need to be able to purchase fuel at ANY intersection, where today, we have at least one gas station selling liquefied dinosaurs....
I need a fuel that is not dependent upon electrical generation...the costs are pretty high since the losses in conversion are high.....
I need to be able to tow 10,000 lbs with the vehicle.....
I need a four wheel drive.....
I refuse to ride in a tiny, teeny coffin that is just a speed bump or grill detritus to RV's and SUV's.....
I need mountain driving capacity with speeds at or very near the limit because if I don't go that fast, the motorhome behind me is going to splat me all over his headlights like a big bug.....
I love General Motors and appreciate what they make over any other brand....on a day-to-day basis, ruling out Ferarris, Isuzus and Porsches of course!

543599 2007-04-24 23:13:00 What about the hybrids that use an internal combustion engine running at optimal efficiency to top up the battery, turn the wheels with an electric motor more efficiently as the gear is always right, and recover energy used in braking or going downhill?

Fuel your vehicle from the average gas station for longer trips, and/or plug into the wall to top the battery's from your local nuclear power plant rather than your increasingly more expensive limited supplies of rotting dinosaurs powering short local trips?

Do you mean the Stirling engine concept ( . wikimedia . org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/1/1b/BetaStirlingTG4web . jpg/618px-BetaStirlingTG4web . jpg" target="_blank">upload . wikimedia . org) and apply it to a generator-transmission splitter-type device?

Perhaps a hybrid Stirling Cycle with the energy in the form of heat from braking re-invested into motive forces?

Nope .

Collecting these energy forms and re-converting them to motive values to turn the wheels is just plain wasteful .

In these recent years of energy shortages and politicized availability, the advantages of Stirling engines have become increasingly significant, given the general rise in energy costs, energy shortages and environmental concerns such as climate change .

These growing interests in Stirling technology have fostered the ongoing research and development of Stirling devices .

The applications include water pumping, space-based astronautics, and electrical generation from plentiful energy sources that are incompatible with the internal combustion engine, such as solar energy, agricultural waste and domestic refuse .

Notice it says NOTHING about automotives .

The problem is that the greedy oil cartels . . . (and that's a good name: "Cartels" as in drug cartels) . . . have us all on a high energy "fix" .

Give me distillate of dino any day or a small yield nuclear device under the hood! :p
