542818 2007-04-21 05:53:00 Here was me thinking that Macs were the bees knees.

No need to update this and that like any version of Windows.

Maybe I was wrong:-

And how do they know that their Mac does not get updated stalthily?

The don't run firewalls and for all you know, Apple could update their OS's without user acknowledgment.

542822 2007-04-21 12:56:00 Macs have firewalls which are switched off by default on a new machine. The difference between OS X and Windows is that with a Mac you only get limited user privilages by default and all ports are closed on a new system until you open them. OS X gets security updates just the same as Windows and Linux, as well as system updates. I installed the latest bunch of security updates on my machine yesterday. You just have to enter your user password to install the user updates. winmacguy (3367)

This is what gets me about Macs: how users get totally sucked in by the clever marketing. They don't just like their Macs, they LOVE them, and feel personally insulted if anyone criticizes their beloved. Really, the advertising over the years has been brilliant, or disgusting, depending on one's viewpoint. The only worse adverts that I can think of are MacDonalds. Funny that: both are "Macs".

I love that "by default" bit.

Most people just want to get a personal computer of any sort within budget.
You can change the default on any operating system and also within applications.

I would nominate the BP ads for their coffee, The TV ads promoted a metrosexual with a bizarre sexual twist (poofta) and the current radio ads feature moronic tossers who need a good beating.

Both promotions make me want to avoid their coffee, Which isn't any good anyway. Fine when ranked with other swill available from a scungy servo but thats about it.

An Apple could ASPIRE to be a lemon, but it would mean improving by replacing both the software and the hardware. With pretty much anything. :D
