They will still have to update it for years to come. They just wont sell it anymore (didn't someone here say they can still buy OEM 98SE?).

542599 2007-04-20 06:21:00 Gods sake.

Its not. For users, yes.
System builders is longer than that.
So I can get XP for a lot longer if you're all so panicked and feel you'll need another copy for some reason.
Or don't you already have it?

I could buy Win98 18 months ago. What was MS discontinue time on that? Not 2005 I bet.

M$ will cease investing time looking for pirate versions of XP...they are too busy concentrating on getting their albatross (Vista) off the ground.

542601 2007-04-20 06:28:00 Actually Dell computer is going to continue to sell Win XP to bail itself out of the financial POO! according to this article

Dell brings back XP on home systems

update Dell is bringing XP back.

Amid significant customer demand, the computer maker said on Thursday that it has returned to offering the older Windows version as an option on some of its consumer PCs.

Like most computer makers, Dell switched nearly entirely to Vista-based systems following Microsoft's mainstream launch of the operating system in January. However, the company said its customers have been asking for XP as part of its IdeaStorm project, which asks customers to help the company come up with product ideas.

"We heard you loud and clear on bringing the Windows XP option back to our Dell consumer PC offerings," Dell said on its Ideas in Action page. Users get to vote on various suggestions, and the notion of bringing back XP got 10,000 "points," making it among the most popular requests but well below top picks such as adding Linux or OpenOffice.org to its PCs.

Windows XP systems became scarce, but not impossible to find, after Vista arrived. For example, Hewlett-Packard said it would continue selling XP on some machines aimed at small and midsize businesses, while CompUSA still stocks a couple of business-oriented XP systems in its retail stores. Lenovo has also continued shipping XP on many of its business systems.

542602 2007-04-20 08:27:00 Oh dear, how some people love to worry...

At least pctek is trying to turn some of you sensible about XP's life, but those who are determined to believe the sky will fall will doubtless ignore her.

(I gave up 98SE for XP only because I got a newer/old comp which had it. And the doomsayers were predicting 98's imminent death well before I bought it)

Anything can happen between now & 2008.
(When young, I never thought more than a year ahead. And nowadays, I don't even count on being here after 2008)

Anybody getting their knickers in a twist now about XP's future availability surely hasn't anything really important in life to worry about?
Perhaps we should be envious..

542603 2007-04-20 09:35:00 I thought this article might interest a few people.

After a lifelong allegiance to all things Microsoft, the chief executive of Dell is using Linux in his own home. His choice of distribution? Ubuntu.

It has emerged this week that the Dell chief is using a Precision M90, loaded with the just-released version of Ubuntu called Feisty Fawn. He is also running OpenOffice and Firefox, according to his biography on Dell's website.

542604 2007-04-20 11:31:00 I like this comment from Microsoft regarding Dell's moves to bring back XP
"Other analysts speculated that the reason consumers were keen on XP was because it was familiar and it worked well with many of the digital peripherals they owned.

In response Microsoft said that Dell was responding to a "small minority" of customers who had a very "specific" request."
