| 542536 | 2007-04-20 07:59:00 | I don't think many people really care anymore. We have been so saturated with rugby which was once a winter sport and now is played all year long that people are not watching anymore. Some interesting comments such as this at this link www.nzherald.co.nz There is no passion in rugby these days... its starts in summer and finishes in summer. It is rugby rugby rugby all year round and it gets boring. Even the players are sick of it and the proof lies in the fact that no longer do top players hold playing for the All Blacks as their dream. They give up the All Blacks to go overseas and earn money, even though they could be wearing the black Jersey with the click of a finger,(Carl Hayman for example). Its about money these days, not passion. Administrators, players, media companies, tv rights etc.. its a business now, not a sport, and the passion is dying. And with it the interest of the fans. |

Hmmm....I agree with some of that. IMHO professionalism killed the game in this country. Too many of the players act like primma donnas (sp?), who are paid vast sums of money to train, drink coffee and play a bit of footy in the weekend. If the attendance figures at the S14 games this year are anything to go by, your comments are not far wrong. Interesting to note thought there were (apparently) 30,000+ at Jade last night. Just shows even the Cantabrians are bored with their team's formulaic rugby, and come along in their droves to see an exciting, if not consistent, Hurricanes team perform. The Crusaders may win games, but they have forgotton that rugby first and foremost is about entertainment, hence half the town turns up at Jade when the 'Canes are in town! T |

The fact that you cant get it on normal TV is why most people dont watch now. Sky is too much of a rip off to bother. I for one am still a fan. |

A "fan" would pay for Sky to watch live rugby, as I (used) to do. And will do again. And look to cut costs elsewhere in their lifestyle to finance it. That said, each to their own. Frankly, I find the Rugby Channel worth every cent....it gets around the argument that "there's never anything on tv". Like a loyal dog, it's always there for you, and asks for little in return. |
