| 542464 | 2007-04-20 00:09:00 | Did anyone watch police 10-7 a few weeks ago? basically there was a guy sitting on a bus stop bench at night and he was passed out there because he was drunk. he was passed out and asleep. he was not hurting anyone. now the police came over and gave him two options.they said he can either go back to the police station and sober up for the night or they will take him home. the man said no thanks he will stay on the bus stop bench. but the police said he had to choose one of the options they suggested. so he agreed for them to take him home. my question is, if you are not doing anything he which he was not because he was passed out drunk on a bus stop seat at night, can the police take you to the cells or take you home? why can't you just stay where you are? |

Didn't you get enough replies on Geekzone a few weeks ago? If you're passed out drunk, that's "not doing anything" it's called being intoxicated in a public place and the Police can take you home, to a shelter or detox centre or hold you for 12 hours. It's mainly for your own safety. |

It is againt the law to be intoxicated in a public place. From the Summary Offences Act 1981 37A Persons found intoxicated in public place (2)Any constable who finds any person intoxicated in any public place (a)May take or cause that person to be taken to his usual place of residence or, if he is temporarily residing elsewhere, to his temporary place of residence; or (b)If that place cannot reasonably be ascertained or it is not reasonably practicable to take that person to it or it may not be safe to leave him there, may take that person or cause him to be taken to any temporary shelter or detoxification centre; or (c)If neither the course authorised by paragraph (a) nor that authorised by paragraph (b) of this subsection is reasonably practicable, detain or cause that person to be detained in a police station for any period not exceeding 12 hours. |

| 542468 | 2007-04-20 09:02:00 | The Police were doing him a favour, surely. If he had stayed there, in all probability, he would have been mugged & beaten up. Don't you think?? PJ | Poppa John (284) | ||

| 542470 | 2007-04-20 10:24:00 | The drunk guy is risking his own safety......and if he was beaten up and mugged, that would cause the police more problems. And we all know drunk, passed out people are sitting ducks..... |

| 542471 | 2007-04-20 10:30:00 | And wasnt there a case, where someone was drunk, the cops left the person there. And he was hit, or killed a while ago? |

| 542473 | 2007-04-20 22:36:00 | And wasnt there a case, where someone was drunk, the cops left the person there . And he was hit, or killed a while ago?Probably many . . . There was a passed out piece of street life who was basically kicked to death by passing drunken "young adults" a few blocks from my home last year . (nice area ey?) Why did they do it? Same reason everest had to climb the hill thing . . . 'cause they could . The streety fella was asleep, and from what i can gather under a tree, but visible from the road . They boys that killed him simply saw someone vulnerable, and killed him . While they may have only planned to hurt him severely, or have what they may have considered to be a bit of fun, it shows what can happen to those who are passed out doing nothing . |
