542170 2007-04-19 02:37:00 I've just been rung 4 times in he last 24 hours by different companies, wanting me to go to their "free" financial seminars.

I am sick of them. I either:
-tell them if I wanted to go I would call them, not them call me and then hang up.
-ask them where they got my name and phone number and then tell them to remove it from their list.
-book 6 spaces on there seminars and then not turn up.

And surveys, oh my god!
I use to tell them to p*%$ off. but now I answer their questions and give extreme views to stuff up there surveys. (3% accuracy, yeah right)

When a friend of mine got a call from McDonalds poll (yes the restaurant) they ask him for a "statement that sums up McDonalds" he answered "Child abuse"

Has anyone got a sure fire way of stopping these people short of disconnecting my phone?

542172 2007-04-19 03:06:00 One evening, we received a telephone call from a Real Estate agent:
RE: "We have a client who is interested in buying your house"
Mom: "But we are not selling our house!" :D

542173 2007-04-19 03:13:00 There is a register you can ask to be put on to have your number blacklisted for some of these calls.

It's compiled by an official group of telemarketers & although not all belong to it, I believe it's a help.
But I don't remember the details right now.
Somebody else on the forum may?
Or phone your local Citizens' Advice Bureau, who will know.

(Not so many in Dunedin, so I was actually intrigued to be asked to do a Colmar Brunton political survey recently. Made me realise they do find real people)

542174 2007-04-19 05:31:00 Has anyone got a sure fire way of stopping these people short of disconnecting my phone? You can't stop them phoning, because for every list you get your number off, another 10 lists will collect it.

The best way to deal with those cold calls is to simply hang up in their ear as soon as you can be sure it is not somebody you want to talk to. This method takes about one second or two syllables, but carries no challenge and is not very satisfying! It also tends to raise your blood pressure a bit because being rude can be quite stressful if it doesn't come naturally.

My preference is to accept the challenge of removing them from my ear inside of 10 seconds without being rude. They all work from scripts and must follow that script exactly as written or get hauled before the boss when he/she reviews their tapes.

It goes like this:

CC: Good morning, I'm calling from XYZ Corp, how are you this morning?

Me: (Cheerful voice) Fine thanks, what the heck does XYZ Corp do?

CC: Oh... we sell widget polishing services.

Me: I don't require my widgets polished, but thanks for calling anyway. You have a great day now. Bye

At that point their script is in ruins and there's no way back. ."

On average that takes less than 10 seconds.

If they try to recover "but surely you...."

Me: No, I said I don't, but thanks for calling. Click...........

My daughter does part time work as a telephone sales caller and she just hates my approach, she says it really stuffs them up, so I showed her how to recover, get past it and return to her script. I learned that from an ace salesman who was so damned good I listened to him for 5 minutes just to learn at the feet of a master.

Cheers

LOL

I Just normally say "Sorry, not interested" it's not very origional or witty, but it works.

I remember when I was about 17 a life insurance company rang asking if we would like to talk to them (they obviously thought I was my dad). I said "Do we have an account with you?" They said "Errr, no but..." "Well in that case no I don't want to talk to you, good bye."

Dad said they'd rung a couple of days ago and he told them he wasn't interested.

542176 2007-04-19 05:47:00 They used to have an on-line form, but its changed.

The link is here
www.marketing.org.nz

I "subscribed" to the name (and number) removal register a year or so back, have had only about 2 calls since. In those cases I simple stated that as their organisation was not following the Marketing Association guideleines the call would be terminated. Click.

It actually does work, calls are zero now and used to be 2 or more per week, usually early evening.

542177 2007-04-19 05:51:00 My approach is that as soon as I realise they are a telemarketer I say:

"You have 10 seconds to convince me not to hang up startning now" then I count down aloud "9..8..7..6..better start talking..5..4..3..2..1..times up" <click>.

It may not work but I enjoy it. :)

542178 2007-04-19 05:56:00 Have two people by the phone when it rings, one male and the other female.

Have the lady pick up the phone and talk for a little while. Then enter the male asking whats going on, have him become angry and abusive, with lots of swearing, loud whips and crashes and suddenly hang up.

When police arrive, act dumb.

Annoying caller will get fined for wasting time.

542179 2007-04-19 06:36:00 Yes I had Sky TV ring up once.
Sky TV, Have you heard thought about getting Sky,
Me, Yes I have and I don't want it,
Sky, Long silence as I have not answered as per there script.
As you can probibly guess I shouldn't of said I don't want it.
Anyway what I do now is hang up on cold callers, and since I have started doing that I don't seem to get so many calls.
