543077 2007-04-22 09:09:00 For those who are interested: Mee Goreng translates to "Fried Noodles". (Mee Goreng is a Malay term, literally translated to "noodle fried", which essentially means fried noodle. It is definitely a nice dish!

Malaysian Food FTW! :D

Cheers :)

543079 2007-04-22 09:20:00 Only 1 place to eat.

The Long Bar in Brandon St (in the CBD).
Very extensive menu, very reasonable prices, but you simply have to have the Mee Goreng. Best on the planet.

Been there a couple of times myself - good food - would recommend it as well.

I'm flying to Wellington on Tuesday morning to link with my Auckland sister for a holiday.
Mostly we'll be going around the traps (relatives in North Island towns ) & although most of the itinerary's still play-it-by ear, we'll have several days in Wgtn.
Wondering what to do when our hosts are working isn't actually a problem, as we have been there before.
But just in case any PF1 locals have a "favourite" I mightn't think of, I'd be keen to hear.

So what's already on my list?

Ta Papa, of course - and we'll just make it before Egypt-Beyond the Tomb closes.
We know the top of Mt Victoria, the Kelburn cable car, Botanical Gardens, Courtenay Place & Parliament.
So long since I saw the Zoo, they were still having chimps' tea parties. Worth a look nowadays?
And is there still an art collection on display at the old Art Gallery building, or has it all gone to Te Papa?
What about visiting Kapiti Island? Possible? Expensive? Worth it at this time of year?

We ate at some interesting ethnic restaurants last visit. Great food, but high-priced. Anything cheap & scruffy visitors don't usually find?
(Chinese, Indian, Malay whatever?)
We'll be at Point Howard, relying on buses, for the first few days - then inner-city for the weekend, then ???, depending on which cousin has most space...

You have also got the Wairarapa, which is about the same distance as kapiti, but not the bad roads and gridlock. There you have got Greytown(which has been overtaken by Wellington people) which is NZs most complete street of timber colonial shops in NZ. You have also got Martinbourgh and the vineyards. You have also got the new Stonehenge in Carterton, although I wouldn't recommend it.

543081 2007-04-22 10:49:00 Good thread Laura, I have bookmarked it for a possible nosy around Wellyville myself in the hopefully not-to-distant future.

Have a great holiday. :)

543083 2007-04-23 09:15:00 If you have to use public transport investigate the day rover and other concession tickets. Will save you heaps. Try spending half a day riding the trains. Trips to Johnsonville and Paraparaumu quite scenic. tutaenui (1724)
543084 2007-04-23 10:05:00 Probably too late to catch you - but the Marine Museum on the wharf, half a km from Te Papa is quite something. Scouse (83)

I imagine that this post has already been picked up by the big eye in the sky, and has already been transmitted to MI5, FBI and CIA (oh, and that bunch of imitation spies in Enzed - the SIS) via Waihopai.

Bye bye Graham, it has been nice knowing you...
