542513 2007-04-20 11:37:00 I used to be a Traffic Cop with the Auckland City Council then I joined the Ministry of Transport. I used to do driver license testing for the MOT in Auckland. ...
BUSTED!!! The dreaded enemy!! At least, when I was a motorcycle courier trying to earn a living back in the mid-eighties!! :) Wouldn't be surprised if you gave me one of my (many) infringements for doing 60km/h in a 50km/h out the back of Grey Lynn with no other traffic to be seen!!! ;)

542514 2007-04-20 11:40:00 They're still _supposed_ to signal left off a round-about.

When I went to sit my restricted some 4-odd years ago I made sure I practiced and made a point of that for a month worth of driving before-hand.
I passed my restricted with the only comment "You didnt have to change into 2nd gear while turning right into that street, you could have stayed in 3rd". I passed my Full license perfectly.

Seriously, so much safer to signal off a round-about, and now that Im riding a motorbike I see so many idiots on the road, its totally opened my eyes to a world of idiot drivers that dont signal, tailgate, drive while drinking / on the phone / smoking / writing on a clipboard / eating, and Ive even seen somebody doing a combination of all those 4 things! Seriously, I wonder if some people got their license from a weet-bix packet at times!
Which is why is so important to drive as if everyone else on the road is an idiot - more often than not, they are (present company excepted, of course!!!! ;) )!!

so true, the things you see on a bike you miss on a car (like the shocking state of our roading) are incredible. also, i hear from go-kart marshalls and my old driving instructor that they find bikers to be much more aware of their surroundings (and as a result dont clip walls in a go-kart).

the reason? if a biker stuffs up he gets hurt, possibly very badly, knowing this helps, natural selection fixes the rest:rolleyes:

i reckon whoever on this forum who suggested a mandatory scooter period for learners was right... saves on gas too:D

542516 2007-04-21 12:34:00 Yeah, gotta admit, 250KM from $11 gas, pretty darn appealing! Saving me a bundle every week now... :D

ANYWAYS... Yes, its a requirement, you _must_ ride with all your wits about you, or otherwise the mother with sreaming kids in the car, or the businessman driving while on his cellphone, or the chippy eating a pie while driving the work van, or the uni student pulling out of her driveway in a hurry, the man in the legacy who just cant make up which lane to stay in thats changing suddenly & always without notice... all potential accidents from one days riding, today alone (Of course, none would have been you johcar! ;) )... Whats tragic is half the people flipped me the finger when they realized they almost hit me, like it was my fault for not *knowing* what was going through their minds as they swerved across the road like the ruled it. Idiots. Next time I'll remember to consult Godfathers crystal ball before I ride :p

But yeah, back on track, when you get your restricted / full, its an insane boost of confidence! Sadly, that doesnt directly translate into skills or driving abilities. Many people, myself included, often get that mistaken.

542518 2007-04-22 03:32:00 Do you know if people are allowed to turn right across the centre line to (eg to turn off to go down a driveway), when the road has double yellow lines. eg they have to go across the yellow lines. I find that people do this all the time on the Petone part of the motorway in Wellington. I have seen too many crashes their, where people litrally stop on the motorway, blocking traffic, so they can turn right across the yellow lines. It is one of the most dangerous roads in NZ, and they should put thise wire median thingees instead of the yellow lines.Did you know that in the road code it says if you are turning right and there is a possiblity of impeding traffic behind you, you are supposed to pull over as far LEFT as practical to the side of the road (thus no longer impeding traffic and also no longer a threat to oncoming traffic should someone rear end you).

It may have changed, but thats how I remember it

yeah, i remember it too. it's common sense really.

i also hear you can pass where there is double yellow lines if you do not cross them ie the campervan infront actually notices the 5km line of traffic and pulls left enough to allow safe passing

542520 2007-04-26 01:36:00 80% aye. so how many questions are there in the full licence test? Just so i can use this figure to find how exactly how many questions i can fail.

The LTSA fact sheets suggest 80% overall to pass full, no similar figure for restricted. Just go for 100% and live longer.

542521 2007-04-26 01:57:00 It's not questions but actions. The full test is a practical driving test.
www.ltsa.govt.nz

You can also fail straight away for some things
" When you might fail the test

If your driving endangers anyone, the test will end. If the danger was caused by your error, you won't pass the test. If you break any traffic law, you'll fail the test.

The testing officer will take very close note of your speed. You'll fail if you exceed the speed limits.

You may also fail the test if you don't stop at Stop signs or don't indicate before a manoeuvre."

542522 2007-04-30 01:03:00 The whole driving thing is stupid. You should receive your full after 18 months od having your restricted and do a defensive driving course. You shouldn't have to do a stupid test and identify crap. Emerald (12165)
