543905 2007-04-24 11:54:00 Ah but is the pic clearer than sky digital some how i doubt it as they both feed off the same satellite. Hitech (9024)

HUH?

Me thinks you don't really understand the satellite has stuff all to do with the quality. Its all to do with the video bitrate, most of the channels on Sky except the movies and sports generally use 3-4mbitts. What is classed as Professional broadcast grade for mpg2 is generally in the 7mbitts and above range. DVD uses similar bitrates.

The Tv3 and C4 FTA signal look fantastic and are using 6.2 mbitts. Full D1 resolution 720x576 and 256kbit audio (Sky's are usually 160-192kbit)

Sky's broadcast of Tv3 use to be (and may still be) 544x576 resolution.

543907 2007-04-24 22:30:00 Yep, the picture quality is good... well, way better than the rabbits ears :)

if you've got a Sky dish on the roof and don't want to pay for the crap they churn out over and over- my recommendation is buy a cheap box off Trade-me. No point in spending $300+ for an 'approved' box that doesn't do any better (unless you're paranoid about quality and warranty stuff).

The one I got for $100 works fine and the program guide goes as well. About 4 in degree of difficulty to set up, but no worse than trying to program a video recorder.

543908 2007-04-24 22:38:00 quality looks great, all that's needed now is Prime. That can't be too far away, can it? DarkCypher (11945)
543909 2007-04-24 23:40:00 quality looks great, all that's needed now is Prime. That can't be too far away, can it?My understanding is that Prime will only be available on terrestrial.

It's good to hear that the transmission quality is good. :)

543910 2007-04-24 23:47:00 when you receive 720x576 resolution
the source from the broadcast station are at least that resolution right??
can you see signs of scale up? anyone know that native resolution of the materials being broadcasted?

maybe not too important~just a question out of interest

543911 2007-04-25 02:01:00 Note 1: It is on transponder 12456 H

Note 2: At the moment, the aspect ratio seems majorly broken, they are not transmitting in either pure 16:9 or even 4:3 with letterboxed 16:9 like tvnz, which means that it will not look correct on a widescreen or a normal screen - everyone misses out.

Hopefully they sort it out soon.

543912 2007-04-25 09:10:00 There has been some talk on this on the Freeview list basically the 16x9 flag is set in the stream fulltime. They are not switching it when 4x3 content is broadcast. This is a standard way of doing it they don't want to cause disturbances from tv's or stb switching the pics aspect every few seconds (during adverts) apsattv (7406)
543913 2007-04-25 10:37:00 Freeview list? Care to elaborate? kirjava (9232)
