| 1433902 | 2017-04-08 00:02:00 | We own a 2010 Honda Fit and I was wondering if it has a cambelt or a timing chain? We also own a 2011 Ford Transit motorhome. What about that? As I understand it, if it has a timing chain we need not worry but if it has a cambelt it will need renewing as it is more than five years old and if it fails the insurance will not cover it, so as you see, I need to know. Thanks so much for your help. |

| 1433903 | 2017-04-08 01:28:00 | Look at the pulley end of the motor, if it has a cam belt it will have a black plastic cover over it. If it has a timing chain it will be enclosed in the aluminium cylinder block as it runs in oil. No plastic cover. The Honda probably also has a balance shaft belt (as in the Accord) Some Honda's (Accord) have the water pump driven by the cam belt, the pump should be replaced because if it seizes it will break the belt and wreck the motor. (pistons strike open valves and break/bend things) Rule of thumb for cam belts is 100,000 K or 5 years. Timing chains usually last the life of the motor, I have only had one fail in 65 years of being a mechanic. |

| 1433908 | 2017-04-08 08:43:00 | Had cam belt break on me with a '79 Mk IV Cortina and few years later on a '88 Mitsubishi Delica. Luckily my uncle taught me how to replace the bets/tensioners/pumps. But point to learn is to keep an eye on the K's, which I did not at the the time. My current Honda RA6 Odyssey cam belt was replaced at 105, 000 k without breaking (now at 170, 000 k). Had a Nissan SR 20 Avenir, timing chain was noisy on cold start ups. Then becomes quiet after warming up. We replaced the tensioner, and removed the upper inner guard. Came quiet; I think the chain may have stretched a little. |

Might have been a non-interference design, where after a cambelt break the valve wont get hit by pistons regardless. ? Ive had a valve break through fatigue (yep, a Fiat) . What mess, it got pushed through the head. |
