1434500 2017-04-27 05:30:00 Silly me. I have to open a picture fullscreen to get the dropdown you are referring to. When I do I get 2 choice in open with....Movie maker or Paint. Does this sound right? So can I put "My Pictures" on there as a third alternative? PJ

Open Windows Explorer, scroll to folder with pics in it.
RIGHT click, not left, one of the photo files.

Then select.
Or if there are no choices of program you like, select BROWSE, then you can browse to the .exe of the program you want to be your default pic viewer.

1434501 2017-04-27 05:51:00 I thought about Picasa but see that it is now defunct. It is now Google Pictures. Any pros & cons about Google Pics? PJ
You might find this useful for downloading Picasa;
http://googlephotos.blogspot.co.nz/
If you go down about halfway you see this; *If you'd prefer to keep using Picasa 3.8, you can download it from our archives here (Mac - Windows).
I think it works. I like Picasa myself as I can find the folder a particular image is stored in quickly, simply by right clicking on the image and then clicking on "locate on disk".
If you're still interested in Picasa as a photo management tool, I'd be interested to hear how you get on with it.

1434502 2017-04-27 05:57:00 The other thing is, Google Photos seems to be, to me anyway, just like so many other photo management sites as a devious way to suck people into their "cloud type services", and with no particular better features than any of the others. Picasa shines in thet if you choose not to, then you don't have to be part of that.
Another reasonable one is, if you have Photoshop, then Bridge kind of "fits the bill". All what we get used to I guess.

The photos App OR Photo Viewer in windows 10 doesn't actually contain the Photos, they are ONLY programs that display them in another location. By default the Pictures Folder. With the photo App you can select via the settings different folders to "watch" for any new additions.

The old Picasa is exactly the same, it doesn't actually contain the pictures/photos you have, it only reads them, you could happily uninstall Picasa and all your pictures will remain exactly where they were.

1434505 2017-04-28 03:50:00 How many times have I tried to convince people that images aren't IN Picasa or any other manager!

Worst case is deleting them from, say, Picasa!!

These are programs that display/edit your pics.
The actual location of your picture files is - well, I don't know, whatever folder you put them in.

1434507 2017-04-29 00:23:00 So It looks as if what I have got Is what I've got. Something has improved however. Photo Viewer Is there in part. I now have a longer Dropdown & options.
Thanks for your help.

Till next time. PJ
