1434515 2017-04-24 21:59:00 I have an HP Pavillion (32 bit) that has XP installed. I want to up grade the OS.

My existing desktop (64 bit) did have W7 home premium installed (this was OEM) and this was replaced by the then free W8 and later upgraded to W8.1 from a disk that I purchased.

As I still have the key for W7 from the desktop and even if it is OEM, could I use this to install W7 on the laptop (32 bit), even if the Product key was for 64 bit? I have copies of W7 HP upgrade OS to load the system so would they work when the key was for a full install, not upgrade?

I do realise that OEM is for the system it was originally installed on but as the systems OS has changed can I reuse he key on another system?

Not entirely true.... I've "re-installed" OEM Windows versions (i.e. using the OEM key on different hardware) many times. As long as the OEM key is only used on a single system at any point in time there should be no issues with activation.... worst I've had was having to ring Microsoft Support to advise them I've upgraded or changed the hardware and that the key is only in use on one system. They usually provide you with a new activation code for the new hardware.

Whilst they "say" OEM is non-tranferrable that is not entirely true. It can be done albeit you may have to jump through a few hoops to activate the license on the new machine.

Bryan, why not upgrade to Windows 10 using the Windows 7 key, there is a thread here (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) discussing this.

Whilst the "free" upgrade offer for Windows 10 is "officially" over, these can still (unofficially) be done for now so I'd get in quick before MS decide to cancel further free upgrades.

I performed an upgrade recently from Windows 7 Pro to Windows 10 Pro without any issues.

You may be able to take advantage of this still if you're quick...

Hope that helps.

Technically? Yes.

Legally? MS says not.

1434519 2017-04-25 07:41:00 It is entirely true, just because you can bodge your way around it doesn't make it untrue. It is possible to convince MS to give you a new key but they don't have to and there is no legal reason for them to.
Generally though if you convince them it's a repair or the old board failed they will let you reinstall and give you a new key, something they often let slide. Spinning a story to get a free copy of windows is pretty dodgy though.

allpcworld.com , in operating systems Windows 7 for HP/Compaq (still have to have your key)

Good also if you don't have the disk for your particular system when you need one for a non booting system

That site, the ISO's are just that. You still need a key to enter and activate , they do Not contain hacked or illegal keys of any sort.

The last line is true, I needed a Business edition of Vista, the ISO's I have don't contain Business ( every other version but) Had a legit Business key.

1434522 2017-04-25 22:19:00 OK , lets call it what it is.

Re-using OEM COA keys on another PC is piracy. Its that simple .
Yes , piracy is allways technically possible. :)

"An OEM key is not transferrable" . It can be done and often is, but the license isnt transferable .

1434523 2017-04-25 22:24:00 Thanks guys for all the helpful advice. I have taken it all on board and will mull it over and come up with the right course for me to take. Bryan (147)
1434524 2017-04-25 22:36:00 Its been a while, but I dont think you can "upgrade" from XP to 7, it will be a clean install .
So be prepared to backup & reinstall & resetup everything, then hunt for any needed drivers .
