1434045 2017-04-11 06:03:00 I've had my Toyota Corona for about 18 months now, and it's been a good, reliable car.

Anyway, I've been looking at something bigger, ideally a 4wd, for camping trips and the like.

The Nissan Mistral seems to do what I want and be not too expensive on TradeMe. From what I can read, the engine is pretty bulletproof if well maintained, but it might be worth getting a check for any potential rust.

Does anyone here have thoughts/experience with the Mistral?

1434046 2017-04-11 07:11:00 Nick G what are you doing with the Corona?

My Mk2 XT is from 1979, needs an upgrade, lol, we've always had Coronas, had two of the very first Toyota Corona Mk1

Note I am in Christchurch, Woolston.

I could offer you more than whatever your trade-in is if you like.

1434047 2017-04-11 07:27:00 I drive a Navara DX the diesel Nissan engine is very good I get 800Km out of a tank sometimes more if I drive to Chch from Nelson.

Several people I know have Mistrals and they take a hammering but still keep going.

I'll be selling it, no need for two cars, and couldn't afford two anyway. Went through it's WOF today without needing anything, but it's heading back to the garage sometime next week for a scheduled fanbelt + power steering belt change.

Wouldn't sell it before I got that done, but if I do end up getting a Mistral, would be more than happy to sell :)
Mine is a 1992 7th gen.

Sounds pretty promising! I'll make sure I check for rust though, apparently it can crop up on some Mistrals.

1434052 2017-04-11 22:21:00 I looked in my Dog & Lemon Guide and basically they say get it checked professionally before considering it. They say lots of nice things about it in the blurb but rate the reliability/safety as Dodgy/Dodgy

Known issues (summarised)
Air flow meter fails at high km
Gearbox electronics can lose the plot and cost a fortune
front suspension struts prone to failure
Rust in the floorpan - particularly if it's been towing a boat

I'm realistic enough to figure that no 4wd from that vintage is likely to be perfectly trouble free. Even with the Toyota's the 2.4s are notorious for cracking head gaskets etc. Nick G (16709)
