1485139 2022-03-26 08:56:00 I had a thought about this. There is a house near us that never use their dining table unless they have visiting guests. They themselves don't even place food on the table to grab a portion and then walk elsewhere. Then I thought about covid working at home. Unless they are a student, some households might not have a computer apart from their tablet and smartphone. They might not even have a work desk.

I know families which the kids still have computers because they game and only a few years after their graduation. So they have a computer to work from home. The parents themselves some don't have desk, don't have a computer. They might have a second fridge and a dining room to entertain guests thou and a backyard patio with their main dinner table closer to the lounge kinda open plan style. I was looking at Office 365 which is a subscription model. I didn't know 365 is only the option for phones and tablets bc the standalone version only works on proper computers. Also with gaming, is smart device gaming increasing in popularity?

Do you know those who don't as well?

1485140 2022-03-26 21:10:00 Some don't use computers any more, and a lot use smart devices BUT when you need to do serious lots of work a tablet / phone just doesn't cut it. My wife works at home lately and I have set up a AIO on the kitchen table. We never use the table for eating.

It quite interesting because there are some people at my wifes work who say they cant work from home because they don't have a computer or the internet is to bad etc. Their work requires a Computer, phones / tablets simply are completely useless.

Office 365, esp if you want everything, is actually VERY Cheap. With the 6 user / login version which is Professional, it works out at $27.50 a year/ person. and its always upto date.

When you compare to Office home and Student (out right purchase) @ $239 its only got Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. It would take 8.5 years to catch upto the Subscription Price of 365 and thats only 1 user / half the programs.

Office 365, Microsoft changed the way its licensed. It used to be 6 devices, BUT now its 6 Sign ins. (the limit was increased from 5 to 6)

Here's what I'm referring to: office-watch.com

In Some business -- Done this on some PC's a person left the business so I log into the account and sign them out. Of course it basically turns off some important parts of the office features and they cant reactivate it unless they sign in with another account.
Same with the Eset Endpoint Security, log in and deactivate the Software. The Business pays for it so they are not using it without paying. (Unless the Boss says its OK to leave it active - None do)

Real gaming requires either a PC or console.
Phones just can't do the likes of Grand Theft Auto V, Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, Far Cry series, and so on.

My son has a Windows 11 PC for this reason, he isn't a console fan.

Granddaughter uses a PC for school, and a PC (esp dads when she can) for gaming, but everything else is her phone.

True but they keep getting closer. You can connect a smartphone to your TV and use a bluetooth controller and get a very console like experience. Some of the graphics are pretty damn good as well, probably close to last gen consoles. Samsung also let you dock your phone and use it like a PC with a keyboard and mouse and screen using Dex.
I think the day is coming when for some people a smartphone and a dock will be all they need. Smartphones have the potential to eventually do to PCs what they did to portable mp3 players and digital cameras. I'll likely be one of the holdouts with a gaming PC though :)

I read that from a revenue perspective, smart device gaming were where the money is. Not sure if that was hyper talk or .....

If required to work from home, the company should provide them with a Laptop to use at home.
Some companies do this, most dont .

Its stupidity to let a home family PC access the Work network/systems (unless its just 365 emails)
That home PC is being use by kids, neighbors, relatives , for porn sites and illegal download sites . It cant be trusted to be 'clean'

Then again, some people are so PC un-savvy, they literally dont know how to use a PC , so no reason to have one at home.

Funny thing is, some of the people at the Mrs work always go on about how " upto date" and can do anything, then when it actually comes down to it its all Bull .

The computer the Wife is using is her Work at home PC, that's all its used for, good security, remote access when required to their Server, or since as most of her work is online all secure . Don't use Crap Security like AVG/Avast that is more like malware than security .

BUT yep have seen some peoples computers with all sorts of rubbish , you can warn them as much as you like most wont listen .

A little off topic but the best thing I ever did was buy a seperate phone with a seperate number for work.

It was too distracting having work stuff on the personal phone- it would keep coming through long after working hours were over.

Work day is over, turn it off, completely disconnect.

Bliss.

1485147 2022-03-28 18:58:00 Laptops don't quite work for remote work in our role so anyone who didn't have at least a 23inch screen was given two to use, and if they didn't have a proper computer set up, they were given a sort of thin client terminal that connects exclusively to works servers, and none others. even then alot of non PCliterate users had trouble setting up the two screens the_bogan (9949)
