1484423 2022-02-20 18:18:00 So my PC decided to power off in the middle of loading a game, then a couple of seconds later I heard a faint crack.
It nonger powers up, so does that mean it's certainly the power supply gone?

1484424 2022-02-20 19:48:00 Quite likely.
As before (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) swap out PSU and see what happens before moving on to more troubleshooting.

1484425 2022-02-20 20:13:00 Slightly different. I don't get any power going through, no lights, no fans etc. But I'll see if I can find another power supply. the_bogan (9949)
1484426 2022-02-20 21:14:00 Make sure that power point the PC is plugged into is still live first. CliveM (6007)

Yes, It's attached to a 4 way plug (ony one power socket in this room) The point where it was plugged in still works for other apliances, and swapping the points (monitor, speakers) they all work in all four of the points, but still nothing from the Power supply.
But good idea anyway

1484428 2022-02-20 23:40:00 Just finished last week, replacing two power Supplies in two different computers, same house. That bad weather we had, there were some power problems according to the customer, Fridges stopping, lights flickering. Then when the power came right again "POP" -- Two computers same time blew their PSU. wainuitech (129)

Makes a UPS look like a good investment.

1484430 2022-02-21 06:12:00 Makes a UPS look like a good investment.

We had a two hour power cut on Sunday and for the first time ever my UPS paid off :)
However my previous UPS died after a couple years and took the PC power supply with it so I'm not totally convinced still. Power cuts are rare in Hamilton.

I just learnt the smaller UPS in the lounge keeps my internet and NAS running for about 90 mins on Sunday as well so that's useful information. I forgot about the NAS though so it didn't get shut down gracefully, luckily no issues.

As to the OP, yeah probably the PSU but only one reliable way to find out. Well you could disconnect it and try forcing it on by shorting the green wire and one of the black ones on the 24 pin and measuring voltages, but unless you have some way to load the various voltages it's not the most reliable test. No load voltages don't tell you much and volt meters don't show you what's going on all that well. Mainly just tells you if it's totally dead or not.

Also bear in mind although the PSU shouldn't take out other things when it dies sometimes they do.

1484431 2022-02-21 07:04:00 my old UPS the batteries died and it cost more for the batteries than a new unit.
i got a new UPS when i moved and it failed (no power cut) and blew the PSU.
one thing i hated on the UPS was it beeping when power was cut. however if you have the software installed the UPS triggered the PC to shutdown when battery got low.

1484432 2022-02-21 20:13:00 Buy a PC with a GOOD power supply & you dont really need a UPS . Unless the PC is being used 8 hours a day & cant risk losing data you are typing in when power goes off .
Most of the UPS's out there do nothing, the batts being long dead & un-tested . I see that often .

The cheapy UPS's are of questionable value & quality anyway . Some of the Cheapies from several years back were a fire risk .
Running a server with shared databases , then yes, a GOOD UPS is worthwhile .
