They might be well off, or they could have high maintenance lifestyle. At the end of the day for myself, a $4,000 car is a lot cheaper even if you account for potential repairs than a $40,000 car be it a petrol car or a plug-in hybrid or EV, $40k so it accounts the govt subsidy. Taking the average motorist does 12,000km's per year that amounts to maybe $2,500 in fuel costs that's still smaller than a new car. 10-20yrs to break even. In terms of the buses, here in Welly. I've never driven to work in the past ever. Carparking might be another $5,000 a year. Now that the bus passes have a 30 day unlimited use, one could also use it in the weekends and multiple trips on a weekday like after school / work. Why drive out when you have petrol costs, parking hassles, potential parking fines. The 30 day bus passes breakevens with 20 day uses (40 one way trips to a typical area in Welly). So 4x weeks of 5 weekdays. At the moment they are half price until the end of June after the govt subsidy due to the conflict with Russia and Ukraine. |
